ANDRES BONIFACIO

COLLEGE NURSING
STUDENT’S STRATEGIES
OF COPING WITH STRESS
DURING THE COVID19
PANDEMIC
Introduction
• Schooling is one of the most affected aspects of human life due to coronavirus disease-
2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Since the rise and threat of the pandemic, many countries
around the world have decided to temporarily close schools that have affected millions
of students. Consequently, students have been facing a learning crisis due to the
pandemic (Sarmiento, Sarmiento & Tolentino, 2021).
• The COVID-19 pandemic adversely affects the nursing course, nursing is a practice-
based profession, in the sense that the performance of nursing students depends largely
on their clinical practicum; therefore, the quality of clinical training practice is crucial to
the nursing education and profession. Also, nursing students are exposed to many
sources of stress during clinical training and must handle stressful situations accordingly.
• Universities and colleges are forced to migrate from face-to-face delivery to
online modality as a result of the pandemic. However, this sudden shift has
resulted in problems especially for learners without access to technology. When
online learning modality is used as a result of the pandemic, the gap between
those who have connectivity and those without widened. The continuing
academic engagement has been a challenge for teachers and students due to
access and internet connectivity (Dayagbil, Palompon, Garcia & Olvido, 2021).
• . Becoming aware of and understanding students’ clinical practice
stressors and coping strategies during clinical training in different
situations provides educators with valuable information to maximize their
students’ learning opportunities (Hamadi, Zakari, Jibreel, Nami, Smida, &
Ben Haddad, 2021). Thus, it was for this purpose that the researchers will
aim to determine the strategies employed by nursing students of Andres
Bonifacio College in coping stress during the pandemic, this academic
year 2022-2023.
Theory
This study was primarily anchored on Academic Stress Theory postulated by
Campbell-Philips, Halder & Hasib (2020) in relation to Experiential Learning Theory
postulated by Kolb (1984).
• The Academic Stress Theory points out that personal inadequacy, fear of failure,
interpersonal difficulties with teachers, teacher-student relationships, and inadequate
study facilities were concerns of academic stress. COVID-19 outbreak in terms of
psychological outcomes, without addressing and identifying specific sources of stress
related to relational and daily life, changes students' focus on studies. Indeed, the
COVID-19 pandemic-related experiences induced fears of contagion and social
isolation and significant modifications in several aspects of daily routine other than
academic life (Zurlo, Cattaneo, & Vallone, 2020).
• On the other hand, as integral part of coping stress is the experiences on learning among nursing
students. Accordingly, experiential learning is the process of learning through experience, and is more
narrowly defined as "learning through reflection on doing". Experiential learning can occur without a
teacher and relates solely to the meaning-making process of the individual's direct experience.
However, though the gaining of knowledge is an inherent process that occurs naturally, a genuine
learning experience requires certain elements. Accordingly, knowledge is continuously gained through
both personal and environmental experiences. It states that in order to gain genuine knowledge from
an experience, the learner must have four abilities: The learner must be willing to be actively involved
in the experience; The learner must be able to reflect on the experience; The learner must possess and
use analytical skills to conceptualize the experience; and The learner must possess decision making
and problem solving skills in order to use the new ideas gained from the experience (Tria, 2020).
CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK
Figure 1 shows the schematic diagram of the present investigation. The
independent variable shows the nursing students’ stress during pandemic
while the dependent variable shows the nursing students’ strategies of
coping stress during pandemic. The intervening variable shows the profile
of the respondents in terms of sex, age and year level.

Statement of the Problem
• This study will aim to determine the strategies employed by nursing students
of Andres Bonifacio College in coping stress during the pandemic, this
academic year 2022-2023.
Specifically, it will seek to answer the following:
1. What is the profile of the respondents in terms of:
• Age;
• Sex; and
• Year Level?
Statement of the Problem
2. What are the factors contributing to the respondents’ stress during pandemic?
3. What are the strategies employed by the respondents in coping stress during
the pandemic?
4. Is there a significant difference on the factors contributing to the respondents’
stress during the pandemic when analyzed according to their profile?
5. Is there a significant difference on the strategies employed by the
respondents in coping stress during the pandemic when analyzed according
to their profile?
6. Is there a significant relationship on the factors contributing to the
respondents’ stress during pandemic and the strategies employed by them in
coping stress during pandemic?
METHODOLOGY
• This chapter deals with the research method employed on this study. It
includes the methods used, the research environment, the respondents of
the study, the research instruments used on this study, validating the
instruments, the data gathering procedure and the statistical tools to be
used on this research.
• This study shall use the descriptive-survey method of research in
quantitative approach. Adapted-modified questionnaires shall be use as
instruments of data collection and data will be statistically treated to
achieve the primary objective of the study. Noted that the descriptive-
survey research used surveys to gather data about varying subjects. This
data will aim to know the extent to which different conditions can be
obtained among these subjects.
