Livestock
- the pig and poultry farms produce a
Farms:
large amount of manure
- is disposed into the streams with
little treatment
- brings organic waste and ammonia
to the streams

Factories
:- dyeing and bleaching
factories often discharge
chemical wastes and metals into
the streams
Factories:
- discharge the hot water loaded
with toxic chemicals and metals
into sea
- pollute the soils on land which
are then dumped into sea

Transport:
- oil spillage from ships
occasionally contaminates the
sea
Reclamation and
-reduce
Excavation:
the rate of fl
ow across the Harbour
-pollutants are easily
accumulated in the Vic
toria Harbour
- reduces the dissolved
oxygen for the aquatic
organisms
Domestic
Source:
- human excreta is
discharged into the sea
-many sources of water
pollution
- lacks of treatment -close to one another and
facilities in huge amount
- only 34% of Hong
Kong's urban sewage
receives primary -some illegal connections of
treatment or better waste water pipes to storm-
water pipes
-waste water will be
discharged directly into sea
without treatment
1. Pollution reduces the rate of photosynthesis of
plants in water and the amount of food resources.
So fish productivity is reduced.

2.  Cause the rise of red tides

which devastate Hong Kong
fisheries. The food chain will be
affected as well.
3. Many beaches are polluted with solid wastes
which means a loss of recreational resource.

4. Due to the polluted beaches, we have fewer places

to carry out recreational activities.
4. Drinking water
containing pollutants
pose hazards to
health. Pathogens in
water would cause
illnesses in human.

5. Consumption of
seafood accumulated
with pollutants,
would also affect our
health.

( Government )
1.     Legislation and monitoring
- The Water Pollution Control Regulations set the stand
ards of water quality.

- The harbours of Hong Kong are divided into ten Water

Control Zones for better monitoring.
- The livestock waste control scheme has been impleme
nted.
- The costs of treatment are borne by the polluters.
- Conserve water. This helps prevent water shortages and
reduces the amount of contaminated water that needs
treatment.

- Make sure that you take great

care not to overuse pesticides
and fertilizers. This will prevent
runoffs of the material into
|nearby water sources.

- Don’t throw litter into

rivers,
lakes or oceans.
-HK has a heavy burden in landfills
-further encouraged and improved
-should be pushed towards city wide
-limited household waste

-push towards to using natural gas for public transport

-sign agreements
-further improving the environment standards in China
-unique pollution in HK
-encourage to reduce

-better and more environment friendly urban design: more

trees, more parks, more leisure, more greeneries
-buildings and apartments shouldn't be built so close
