CYLINDER HEAD
The cylinder head sits at
the top of the engine. Its
purpose is to seal the top
of the cylinder to create
the combustion
chamber. The head also
forms the housing for the
valve gear and spark
plugs. Inside the cylinder
head are complex
passageways for coolant
and oil.
VALVES
• The valves are installed in a
part of the engine called
the head and are
responsible for letting air
and/or fuel into the
cylinders to be combusted
-- those are called intake
valves -- and for letting the
exhaust from that
combustion out of the
cylinders -- those are called
exhaust valves
INTAKE VALVES
An intake valve is a
valve that controls the
amount of working
fluid entering the
cylinder of an engine.
EXHAUST VALVES
An exhaust valve is a
valve that releases
burned gases from a
cylinder. The exhaust
valve closes during the
initial part of the
induction stroke. The
inlet valve usually opens
a little before top dead
center and the exhaust
valve remains open a
little after top dead
center.
POPPET VALVES
A poppet valve consists of
an orifice that is opened
and closed by raising and
lowering a sealing surface
onto the orifice. It usually
has an internal spring that
holds the valve in the
closed position. When the
spring force is overcome,
the sealing surface lifts off
the orifice and the valve
opens.
POPPET VALVES
A pushrod is basically a
metal tube designed to
transfer the reciprocating
motion of a valve lifter,
riding on the camshaft, to
the valve.
ROCKER ARM
The rocker arm is the part
responsible for
transmitting the
movement of the camshaft
towards the intake and
exhaust valves of the
engine, a process that
occurs through the direct
contact of these parts with
the tappets and according
to the movement of the
shaft.
