Use space strategically.


• Avoid pacing, dancing, hiding behind something, stepping up/back
• Also avoid leg bobbing & foot/ankle twisting
Movement with Purpose (the Bill Gates Exercise)
STEP ONE: “Mr. Gates, members of the Microsoft board, thank you for this opportunity to speak to you.  I
would like to persuade you to donate 10 billion dollars to __________ for the following reasons.”  

STEP TWO: The first reason should be stated from the podium. 
 
STEP THREE: Then the student should move a few feet to the left of the podium to explain the second
reason. 

STEP FOUR: They should then move to a spot right of the podium to explain the third reason.  

STEP FIVE: Afterward, they should return to the podium to say something like, “Thank you for this
opportunity to speak to you today.” 

Speech topics for this exercise can range from the frivolous (“I would like to solicit your 10 billion dollars to
support my weekend pizza fund.”) to the sincere (“I’d like to request 10 billion dollars for the American
Cancer Society.”)
