DROPSY OF FETAL MEMBRANE

By
Dr. Muhammad Mohsen Rahimoon
Lecturer
DROPSY. An abnormal accumulation of serious
fluid in a body cavity or in the cellular tissue
also called hydrops.

FETAL MEMBRANE
• Amnion (Inner layer)
• Allantois (Middle layer)
• Chorion (outer layer)
HYDRALLANTOIS AND HYDRAMNIOS
Excessive accumulation of fluid in amniotic sac is
called as hydramnios and when accumulation of
fluid in allantoic cavity it is called as hydrallantois.

HYDRALLANTOIS. In hydrallantois fluid filled very

rapidly in the last trimester of pregnancy, the
disease is more common in cattle, buffalo and
rare in horses.
HYDRALLANTOIS
• Aetiology. The main cause of hydrallantois is the
dysfunction of placentomes, mostly a cow bearing twins
is more likely to develop hydrallontois.

• The fluid amounts upto 260 liters in extreme cases.

• The number of placentomes are less in diseased cow, so

this less number has to perform more function so they
become hypertrophied, losses their function, abnormal
chorioallantoic function and excessive accumulation of
fluid.
• In this disease the level of estrogen and
progestron is low in the blood.

• Fluid accumulation is very rapid, within 2 to 3

weeks, abdomen become distended tense and
pear shaped.
Clinical sign.
 The condition of sick cow are anorexia,
decrease rumen motality, constipation, body
become dehydrated and weakness, tachycardia
and abdomen is big may be confuse with twine.

 On rectal palpation we feel the uterus is

enlarged filled with fluid unable to feel
placentome or fetus.
• Increase weigth of uterus may lead to musculo
skeletal problem.

• It may be hip injuries, femoral fractures,

rupture of prepubic tendon and venteral
hernia due to rupture of ventral abdominal
wall.
Treatment:

 C.Section
 Induction of parturation
 Inj : Dexamethasone
 Inj: Oxytocin.
 prostaglandin F2α
HYDRAMNIOS.
• The filling of fluid in the amniotic cavity, in this
disease the problem arises in the fetus.

• This is due to genitically defective in fetus.

• Normally the amount of amniotic fluid in 3rd

trimester is 15 to 20 liters.

• This condition is more common in cattle rare in

sheep and horses.
HYDRAMNIOS.
• During normal pregnancy, amniotic fluid is
swallowed by the fetus, then absorbed,
however if the fetus is abnormal, this
mechanism does not occur, and the fluid
accumulates.
HYDRAMNIOS.
Etiology. The condition occur in genetic or
hereditary problem.

 The cow has pear shape abdomen and on

rectal palpation we can feel the placentomes
as well as fetus.
Treatment:
C.Section
Induction of parturation
• Inj : Dexamethasone
• Inj: Prostaglandin
• Inj: Oxytocin
