What is Physical Self?
 refers to the body, the tangible aspect of a person that can
be directly observed and examined.

 is the window to one's personality. By merely looking at


someone's physical features, you can have an idea of
his/her feelings, thoughts and behaviour.

Shavelson described the total self or general self as being made up of academic
self and non-academic self. Academic self is influenced by the learning process
and the individual's emotions, behaviour, and experiences during the learning
stage. Nonacademic self is shaped by an individual's social self, emotional self,
and physical self. Physical self is affected by involvement in sports, exercise, and
other activities that enhance the physical body (Medisauskaite 2009).

K.R Fox (2000) emphasized the factors that encompass physical self-esteem which
includes sport competence, attractive body, physical power, and physical
condition, and how they actually shape the global self-esteem.

⬩ Sigmund Freud's concept of self and personality makes the physical body the
core of human experience. He also stated that ego is first and foremost a body
ego.

⬩ Wilhelm Reich emphasized the unity of the mind and the body. The body is
cetral to all dynamic psychological functioning.

⬩ Erik Erikson considered experience as firmly associated on the ground-plan of


the body.

⬩ Abraham Maslow provided a very important lesson about our physical bodies
when he laid down Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs. Once the physiological needs
are met, the person becomes dedicated to attaining the higher-order needs. That
is why he emphasized that we due attention to all the needs of the body. A well-
nourished, loved, respected, individual experiences fulfillment. On the other
hand, deliberate self-denial and rejection of the body's basic needs will result to
an inactive, crippled organism.

⬩ Indian Tradition. Some showed outright rejection of the body, because they
consider it as the source of desires and attachments while others give due
respect and importance to the physical body,because they attribute it as the
main instrument for spriritual growth and self-realization.

⬩ Buddhist Tradition. The concept of the middle path is vital in one's attitude
toward the body. They believe that the body deserves love and respect, so
there should be neither full indulgence of one's desires nor extreme
asceticism or self-denial.

In general, the body performs its functions least well during
(1) infancy and (2) old age.

Physical efficiency generally peaks in early adulthood


(20 years-40 years old) and start to decline from the middle
adulthood. (40 years-65 years old).

One of the crucial stage of physical development is the


adolescence stage.

What is Adolescence?
 Adolescence is the period of transition between childhood and adulthood.
Adolescence begins at puberty, which can occurs earlier or later and end earlier
or later and vice versa.

What are the Physical Changes of Adolescence?


 There are three main physical changes that come with adolescence:
- The growth spurt (an early sign of maturation);
- Primary sex characteristics (changes in the organs directly related to reproduction);
- Secondary sex characteristics (bodily signs of sexual maturity that do not directly
involve reproductive organs).

BODY IMAGE.
What is Body Image?
⬩ Body image is a combination of the thoughts and feelings that
you have about your body. Body image may range between
positive and negative experiences, and one person may feel at
different times positive or negative or a combination of both.
Body image is influenced by internal (e.g. personality) and
external (e.g. social environment) factors.

Four aspects of Body Image.
⬩ The way you see your body is your perceptual body image. This is not
always a correct representation of how you actually look.

⬩ The way you feel about your body is your affective body image. Feelings
may include happiness or disgust, but are often summarised as the amount of
satisfaction or dissatisfaction you feel about your shape, weight and individual
body parts.

⬩ The way you think about your body is your cognitive
body image. This can lead to preoccupation with body
shape and weight.

⬩ The behaviours you engage in as a result of your body


image are your behavioural body image. When a person
is dissatisfied with the way they look, they may isolate
themselves or employ unhealthy behaviours as a means to
change appearance.

Positive Body Image /Body Acceptance.
- When a person is able to accept, appreciate and respect their body,
they may be described as having a positive body image. This is not the
same as body satisfaction, as you can be dissatisfied with aspects of
your body, yet still be able to accept it for all its limitations.

A positive body image is associated with:


Higher self-esteem. Having a healthy outlook and
Self-acceptance. behaviours.

Negative Body Image /Body Dissatisfaction.
- Body dissatisfaction occurs when a person has persistent negative
thoughts and feelings about their body. Body dissatisfaction is an
internal emotional and cognitive process but is influenced by external
factors such as pressures to meet a certain appearance ideal. Body
dissatisfaction can drive people to engage in unhealthy weight-control
behaviours, particularly disordered eating. This places them at
heightened risk for developing an eating disorder.

TAKING CARE OF OUR
PHYSICAL BODY.
The physical body has been considered as the “real home”, “temple”, or
“vehicle”. It is the only one that we have throughout our entire lives and is also the
one most intimate to us.

Our physical body is our instrument so we can perform our daily tasks. It is
through this body that we interact with other people, with other living organisms
and with the rest of our surroundings. It is just vital that we take good care of every
single structure that makes up our bodies. When we take good care of it, we are not
only referring to the external part,but even the internal components of the body.

Self-care is the intentional, planned and actual act of taking the time to
attend to our basic physical, mental, and emotional needs (Brzosko 2018). It
is quality rest that we offer to our bodies in order to replenish the lost energy
utilized in performing our daily activities. It is an act of love and kindness for
ourselves.

Self-care occurs in three level: physical, mental and emotional.
Taking care of the physical body also entails taking care of our
mental and emotional lives. They should go hand in hand. We
cannot be physically fit and healthy, yet emotionally unstable and
mentally disturbed. We should be healthy in all the three aspects, In
fact health starts from within and manifests outside. Our good
health springs from the mind, which stimulates the heart and the
heart energizes the physical body.
