Fuel Filtration and Tier 3 Engines

Komatsu has adopted for Tier 2 CRI and Tier 3 engine fuel systems new
High Efficiency fuel filters.
 Fuel pre-filters are 10 micron absolute
 Main or secondary fuel filters are 2 micron absolute

Compared with older mechanical injection system, it is necessary to pay a

special attention to keep any foreign substance such as dirt from
contaming the engines fuel.
Therefore, do not use other fuel filters instead of genuine high
efficiency fuel filter.
 50 micron - human hair
 40 micron - full flow cellulose filter
 25 micron - white blood cell
 10 micron - Komatsu fuel Pre-filter
 8 micron - red blood cell
 2 micron – bacteria or Komatsu Main Fuel Filter
 <1 micron - ?

Fuel Specifications

● Do not mix gasoline or alcohol with diesel fuel.

This mixture can cause an explosion.
● IMPORTANT: Due to the precise tolerances of
the HPCR diesel injection system, it is extremely
important that the fuel be kept clean and free of
dirt or water.
● Dirt or water in the system can / will cause
severe damage to both the fuel pump and
injectors.

Fuel Specifications (Cont’d)

● For normal service above -12°C (+lO”F), the use

of ASTM Grade No. 2-D diesel fuel with a
minimum Cetane number of 40 is recommended.
● The use of No. 2-D diesel fuel will result in
optimum engine performance under most
operating conditions.
● Fuels with Cetane numbers higher than 40 may
be needed in high altitudes or extremely low
ambient temperatures to prevent misfires and
excessive smoke.

Fuel Specifications (Cont’d)

● At operating temperatures below -12°C (+lO”F),

use ASTM Grade No. 1-D diesel fuel. The use
of lighter fuels can reduce fuel economy.
● Where a winterized blend of Grade No. 2-D and
No. 1 -D fuels is available, it may be substituted
for Grade No. 1 -D fuel. However, it is the
supplier’s responsibility to provide the fuel for
the anticipated ambient temperature.

Fuel Specifications (Cont’d)

● Use a low sulfur content fuel having a cloud

point that is at least 10 degrees below the lowest
expected fuel temperature. Cloud point is the
temperature at which crystals begin to form in
the fuel.
● The viscosity of the fuel must be kept above 1.3
cSt at 100°C (212°F) to provide adequate fuel
system lubrication.

Fuel Specifications - Diesel Only

At present time only

Diesel 1 and Diesel 2
are approved for Use in
Komatsu HPCR
Common Rail Fuel
systems.
Please contact the local
Komatsu dealer for the
use of low viscosity and
other fuels.
