Introduction

A hybrid power generation system is an interconnection of different

energy sources (renewable or fossil fuels) to produce a specific amount
of energy for the use of man. In this project, an integration of renewable
energy sources (solar photovoltaic, wind and hydro) is connected to the
central grid of the chosen location.

The HOMER pro is a software used for the computation of economic

viability of an electric power system.

3
Objectives

 To analyze the load capacity of the chosen location.

 To examine and analyze the sustainable energy potential for the three
selected renewable energy sources.
 To design a PV-Wind-Hydro hybrid system in a suitable location in
Almaty
 To present the economic and environmental effect analyses of the
proposed hybrid power system.

4
Methodology

 Identify the location in Almaty region where it is feasible to install

the proposed hybrid power station.
 Collate river flowrate, PV and wind energy data required for the
specific location.
 Design and simulate the hybrid system for the selected location with
the resource inputs. Determine the optimal component configuration
and evaluate the proposed model.

5
Optimal Location for Hybrid Power Plant

 The chosen location for the

hybrid power plant should have
sufficient solar irradiance,
adequate wind exposure and a
commensurate river flowrate.
 The chosen location is the
“Moinak Hydropower Plant” in
Almaty region.

Solar Resource Analysis

Clearness index is a measure of the

clearness of the atmosphere.
Solar radiation is the energy
received from the sun via uv rays.
The global horizontal index (GHI)
for the year ranges from
1.44kWh/m2/day to
6.390kWh/m2/day.

Wind Resource Analysis
The monthly average wind speed range is between 3.340m/s and 3.670m/s.
The annual average is 3.46m/s

Hydro Resource Analysis
The river flowrate data was obtained from Leven River, Foxton Bridge, UK.
This is because the flowrate data Sharyn River at the chosen location is
unavailable online.

Wind Turbine Specification (1)
The generated output of the chosen wind turbines is AC and is transmitted directly
to the common AC bus bar in the system. This is an “island” system i.e. no storage
(battery) facility.

Conclusion

 The hybrid system capacity is designed to be at least twice the load

demand. This helps to improve redundancy.
 This system is purely based on renewable energy sources, thus,
limiting carbon emissions and greenhouse effect.
