Intro to Search Engine:-

The internet became the largest source


of information.
Today millions of websites exist and
this number tends to grow.
In2002, OCLC Researchers Researched
the “World Wide Web”.
Inthis research they determined that
there are about 9 million websites on
the internet
InAugust 2006 a survey was done by
Netcraft.
92,615,362 (92 million) sites according to
this survey.
There is an increase of 4.4 million
sites(4.8%) from July, 2006 survey.

 Finding the right information nowadays is hard.
 Hence we need an effective way for retrieving the
right information on the internet.
3 ways for finding information on the internet.
1. Guessing the URL (Uniform Resource Locater)
2. Using a “Search Engine”.
3. Using a subject Gateway.

 The If URL is known we can easily insert it in the address
bar and access the website.
 If not then use directories (Yahoo!, Dmoz, LookSmart) for
broad, general topics.
 Directories classifies resources into subject categories and
subcategories.
 Some includes reviews and/or ratings which can be
accessed by keyword search or by borrowing the
classifications.
 Subject Gateway provides us easy access to network-based
resources.

 Simplest type of Gateway is a set of web pages containing a list of links to
resources.
