01. YEARS OF LIFE.

Sandro Botticelli, originally Alessandro di Mariano di Vanni Filipepi, was

an Italian painter of the Early Renaissance. He lived in Florence from
1445 to May 17, 1510.

02. WHAT SANDRO BOTTICELLI IS RENOWNED FOR.

At the height of his fame, the Florentine painter and draughtsman Sandro Botticelli was one of the
most esteemed artists in Italy. His graceful pictures of the Madonna and Child, his altarpieces and
his life-size mythological paintings, such as 'Venus and Mars', were immensely popular in his life-
time
03. WHAT ARE HIS THE MOST IMPORTANT ACHIEVEMENTS.

Botticelli helped a lot with the renaissance period

because of my success and the beauty of my paint -
ings. He created his only stile of painting and
learned a lot. He painted about 170 paintings that
are still famous today. Sandro Botticelli became
one of the best painters in the renaissance period.
He began to flourish at a young age and master
the most famous painting technic and created his
own one. He also impacted the renaissance by
painting a wide variety of paintings not only reli-
gious.
04. SOME PECULARITIES FROM HIS LIFE.

• Why is he called Botticelli not Filipepi?

According to art historians, this nickname comes from the word 'battigello' meaning craftsman, punching gold into thin
leaves. They were used to create backgrounds and details in paintings of the time. It is likely that Sandro received his first
artistic training in the workshop of his brother Antonio, who was involved precisely in 'beating' gold.
• Sad Madonnas
The sad Madonnas have become the artist's trademark. Meanwhile, few people know that they were, it could be said,
patented by Filippo Lippi, in whose workshop the young Sandro studied for some time. Filippo, a monk, womaniser and tal-
ented painter, created the ideal of female beauty popular in the 15th century. They were just blondes with pale complexions
and sad expressions. Botticelli borrowed the master's model with great success.
• Death in oblivion
Alessandro spent his last years in isolation and oblivion. After the Mystical Birth/Nativity* (shown on the next page), he re-
ceived no further orders. These were the years of success for artists such as Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo and Raphael,
while Botticelli's art was considered outdated. Specifically, the artist's recent work is characterised by a return to fourteenth-
century tastes and an abandonment of Renaissance canons. An internal crisis, an introverted nature and poor health proba-
bly contributed to the artist's isolation.
