SOLOMON ASCH 4

EXPERIMENT ON
CONFORMITY
EXPERIMENT 5

• During the 1950s , psychologist Solomon Asch conducted a

series of experiments designed to demonstrate the powers of
conformity in groups.

• Experiments led by Solomon asked group of students to

participate in a vision test.

• Among 8 participants 7 were confederates and 1 was the subject.

6

• The experimenter stood in front of the room and held up a

display with one comparison line and the students were told to
choose the line that was the same length. Each person in the
room would state their answer out loud. The real participant
was sat at the end of the row and wouls give their answer at
last.

• As expected he was influenced and gave the wrong answer as

other did even if the answer was very clear in front of him.
KEY FINDINGS 7

Asch tested 123 different young men from three different

institutions on different situations and he found that:
• Alone participants and no pressure group made mistakes less
than 1%

• Group participants made errors 36.8%

• Peer pressure can change opinion and even perception.

• Majority of the participants succumbed at least once to the

pressure and went the majority
CONCLUSION 8

At the conclusion of the experiment the real participant was

asked why he had gone along with the rest of the group . In
most cases the real participant stated that while he knew the
rest of the group was wrong ,he did not want to risk facing
redicule.

The result suggest that conformity can be influenced both by a

need to be fit in and a belief that other people are smarter or
better informed.
