Q&A
Question: What are the types of
Meristematic Tissues, its location
and function?
Meristematic Tissues
Definition:
• It is a tissue that is found on plants.
• Mainly consist of actively dividing cells, it helps in the
increasing of length and thickens the stems.

Function:
• Meristematic tissue, commonly present in the primary growth
regions of a plants
• It helps the plants to develop through with expansion and
thickness.
Types of Meristematic
Tissues
Types of Meristematic Tissues
Apical Meristem

Location:
• Located at the tip of the root and shoots.

Function:
• Apical Meristem is present at the growing tips of stems and roots and increases the length of
the stem and the root.
• Give rise to the primary plant body and are responsible for the extension of roots and shoots.
Types of Meristematic Tissues
Lateral Meristem

Location:
• Located at the lateral side of the stem and root of a plant.

Function:
• The girth of the stem and root increases due to the lateral meristem
• This is responsible for secondary growth or increases the stem girth and thickness
Types of Meristematic Tissues
Intercalary Meristem
Location:
• Found at the base of the leaves or internodes.

Function:
• It facilitates the longitudinal growth of a plant organ.
• Helps in the increasing length of the internodes, usually seen on
monocotyledonous plants.
Definition of Terms
Girth
• The girth of an object, for example a person's or an animal's body, is its width or thickness, considered as the
measurement around its circumference. In plant tissues, the thickness or width of the stem is called the girth of the
stem.
Node
• Nodes are the points on a stem where the buds, leaves, and branching twigs originate. They are crucial spots on the
plant where important healing, structural support, and biological processes take place.
Internode
• The intervals on the stem between the nodes are called internodes.
Monolotyledonous Plants
• Monocotyledons are any plants that have flower parts in multiples of three, leaf veins that run parallel and
adventitious roots. Common examples include tulips, onions, garlic and lilies.
