 The Chernobyl accident, which
happened  on April 26, 1986, was
the biggest nuclear accident in
WHERE IT history. This tragedy occurred in a
TOOK PLACE power plant located in the city of
Pripyat, about 20 Km from the city
of Chernobyl in the former Soviet
Union.
HOW MANY PEOPLE It was estimated that at least 28 people
died immediately and more than 100 were injured
LOST THEIR LIVES / at the time of the accident. It is estimated that in

including those killed due to the disaster remains a

 A part of Belarusian forests has been
contaminated and currently between 1 and 2
million people live in contaminated territory.

damage caused by the Chernobyl accident
was approximately 235 billion dollars.
The Level of Destruction
 The disaster began during a test of
reactor 4, when there was a sudden and
unexpected power surge. When
HOW IT operators attempted emergency
HAPPENED shutdown, a much greater increase in
energy production occurred. This
second spike led to a reactor vessel
rupture and a series of steam
explosions.
