Chernobyl Essay

Chernobyl is one of the biggest nuclear disasters in history causing many deaths and

turning a city into an abandoned ghost town. it is one of the biggest disasters of the time. And

one of the biggest nuclear disasters of all time.

Chernobyl wasnt always an abandoned place it was a cultural center. It was inhabited by

many people. It was accompanied by an ultra-nationalist movement in Russia. In the polish-

soviet war of 1919-1920. Then was incorporated into the Ukrainian soviet socialist Republic in

1921.Much later as in 1977 they opened the Chernobyl power plant which was commissioned

by the government this brought many new people looking for jobs at the plant. Therefore raising

the population. Many families moved there and lived on site. Before the disaster Chernobyl had

14,000 people living there.

The power plant consisted of 11 reactors and number 4 was the problem. It was faulty

and a power output surged during a system test.they attempted an emergency shut down but

the reactor exploded at 1:23am and killed 2 workers instantly. It was a level 7 incident which is

one of the highest. The fire and gases were released into the environment causing the area to

become very toxic. The explosion was 400 times higher than that of the Hiroshima bomb. Many

had already suffered varying degrees of radiation poisoning. The residents were told to leave
and abandon all there belongings. The causes of the accident was mechanical malfunction and

human error.

Many of the people there had already suffered radiation poisoning. And we're told to

evacuate and leave everything behind. The residents belongings can still be found there along

with reminents of things before the disaster. Around 28 deaths were caused due to radiation and

many people relocated and never came back. Around 350k were forced to evacuate. To try and

clean up the mess they built a machine called the sarcophagus to try and cleanse the air of

radiation. It trapped around 200 tons of nuclear fuel. Now they have quarantined areas off but

some spots are still open to the public for tours. They are still trying to clean it up and won't be

back to normal for a long time.

This event is noteworthy because it devastated landscapes and cause people's deaths

and many people to abandon their lives.also it is recorded as the biggest nuclear disasters ever.

The area is still affected today.
