Erikson formulated that our personality develops through eight (8) stages, from
infancy to old age.
He argued that social experience was valuable throughout life, with each stage
recognizable by specific conflict encountered between our psychological needs
and the surrounding social environment.
STAGE ONE
Trust vs. Mistrust
Trust vs. mistrust is the first stage in Erik Erikson's theory of psychosocial development.
This stage begins at birth continues to approximately 18 months of age. During this stage,
the infant is uncertain about the world in which they live and looks towards their primary
caregiver for stability and consistency of care.
If the care the infant receives is consistent, predictable and reliable, they will develop a
sense of trust which will carry with them to other relationships, and they will be able to
feel secure even when threatened.
If these needs are not consistently met, mistrust, suspicion, and anxiety may develop.
STAGE TWO
Autonomy vs. Shame and Doubt
Young adults experience this stage from age 19-40 years, this is the
period the individual begins to give up part of their identity to develop an
intimate relationship with others.
Adults approaching (40-65 ) years old become comfortable, most use their leisure time to
contribute to our society, so that our future generations can benefit from it . Some persons
become teachers to lead on the next generation of young adults. generativity gives a positive
attitude that pushes them to make to put their mark on the world by:
Making commitments to other people,
Caring for others,
Accomplishing things that make the world a better place.
Persons who are successful in this phase are often active in their home and community.
Example: volunteering / Mentoring.
GENERATIVITY AND STAGNATION
It
can be concluded that Erikson’s psychosocial theory of
development considers the impact of external factors,
parents and society on personality development from
childhood to adulthood.
According to this theory every person must through a
series of eight interrelated stages over the entire life cycle
