HISTORY OF
RADIOCARBON DATING
• In 1946, Willard Libby proposed an innovative method for dating
organic materials by measuring their content of carbon-14, a
newly discovered radioactive isotope of carbon. Known as
radiocarbon dating, this method provides objective age estimates
for carbon-based objects that originated from living organisms.
• The “radiocarbon revolution” made possible by Libby’s discovery
greatly benefitted the fields of archaeology and geology by
allowing practitioners to develop more precise historical
chronologies across geography and cultures.
RADIOCARBON and
its APPLICATION:

 Radiocarbon dating (also referred to as carbon dating or carbon-14 dating) is a

method for determining the age of an object containing organic material by
using the properties of radiocarbon, a radioactive isotope of carbon.
 An age could be estimated by measuring the amount of carbon-14 present in the
sample and comparing this against an internationally used reference standard.
ISOTOPES OF CARBON
 Following are THREE
isotopes of CARBON:
 CARBON-14

 Carbon-14 (14C), or radiocarbon, is a radioactive

isotope of carbon.
 The primary natural source of carbon-14 on Earth is
cosmic ray action on nitrogen in the atmosphere, and
it is therefore a cosmogenic.
 Carbon-14 decay is beta(-). It emit an electron.
