providing a wide range of services to its
global membership of stakeholders who
always have been shown interests on
the shipping industry.
What
is it?
BIMCO is the main designer regarding
all documents concerning Shipping
Business, which are considered the
main toll of the Balance of Payment at
the mayority of countries in the
Shipping Environment

BIMCO is accredited as a Non-


Governmental Organization (NGO)
with all relevant United Nations
agencies and other regulatory entities
 
 
BIMCO It began in 1905 in Copenhagen, when
112 people gathered maritime transport
to discuss how cooperation can
improve the situation of the shipping
industry in Northwestern Europe.

It is necessary to understand the


meaning of Charter Party. As a matter of
fact, it is coming from the Lating Word
Carta Partita which always has been
designed by the Underwriters, where
one part were for for the Charterers
and the other part for the Shipowners

Today BIMCO members are distributed in


about 123 countries comprising of over
2250 companies. Its members control 65%
of the freight market in the world, while
brokers and agents 1500 plus 100 clubs and
associations complete the international
staff of BIMCO

• CHARTERING
EVERY YEAR, HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS OF TONS OF CARGOES ARE MOVED OVER THE
OPEN SEAS ROUTES. RAW MATERIAL SUCH AS: OILS, IRON ORE, GRAINS, FERTILIZERS,
COALS, SUGAR, SCRAP, COPRA, MEAL, CATTLE ON FOOD, STEEEL,IRON & STEEL SCRAP,
etc; ARE USUALLY SENT BY BULK CARRIERS AND IN LOTS LARGE ENOUGH TO FILL
SHIPS OR VESSELS WITH A SINGLE COMMODITY FROM PRODUCING STATES OR
REGIONS TO CONSUMING AREAS. AS WELL, FINISHED PRODUCTS LIKE STEEL,
AUTOMOBILES, HEAVY MACHINERY AND REFRIGERATED CARGOES ARE
TRANSPORTED IN CONSIGMENTS LARGE ENOUGH TO LOAD SHIPS TO FULL CAPACITY.
ANYHOW, THE CONTRACT FOR CARRYING THE GOODS IS KNOWN BY THE GENERIC
WORD OF “CHARTER PARTY”, A TERM DERIVED FROM THE LATIN CHARTA PARTITA,
WHICH LITERALY MEANS “LETTER DIVIDED”. IN THE EARLIEST DAYS UNDERWRITERS
TOOK THE DOCUMENT AND IT WAS CUT IN TWO PARTS BY THEM IN ORDER THAT
EACH PARTY COULD REMAIN OR RETAIN A SEGMENT BECAUSE BOTH WERE EXACTLY
THE SAME. THE CHARTER PARTY IS A MARITIME CONTRACT BETWEEN CHARTERER
AND SHIPOWNER, OBTAINING THE USE OF A VESSEL OR SHIP FOR ONE OR MORE
VOYAGES, OR FOR A SPECIFIED PERIOD OF TIME. UNDER THIS CONDITION
GENERALLY THE VESSEL OR SHIPS USED ARE TECHNICALLY PRIVATE CARRIERS.
FURTHERMORE, THREE KINDS OF CHARTERS ARE AVAILABLE SUCH AS VOYAGE or
CONSECUTIVE VOYAGE Ch/P, TIME Ch/P, DEMISE OR BAREBOAT Ch/P WITH
PURCHASING OPTION or NOT) AND INCLUDING (CoA) PER LARGE QUANTITIES OF
VOLUM AND VERY LONG PERIODS OF TIME, ALSO CALLED VOLUME Ch/P; ALWAYS
TAKING INTO CONSIDERATION THE SHIP OR VESSEL SEAWORTHINESS.

WITH THE MAIN PURPOSE THAT THE CHARTERER USES
THE HOLD SPACES CAPACITY OF THE SHIP, TAKING
UNDER HIS RESPONSABILITY THE COMMERCIAL COSTS
BUT MAINTENANCE AND REPAIRS COSTS OF THE SHIP ARE

• BARE BOAT OR DEMISE CH/P: IT IS A CONTRACT OR CHARTER PARTY
WHERE THE SHIPOWNER HIRES THE VESSEL TO A CHARTERER FOR A
PRICE DURING A PERIOD OF TIME, AND THE CHARTERER HAS GOT
THE DUTY TO BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE OPERATIONAL COMMERCE
MANAGEMENT & NAUTICAL OPERATION OF THE VESSEL
• THE SHIPOWNER HIRES THE VESSEL WITHOUT MASTER, CREW,
BUNKERS, OIL, AND CHARTERER IS IN CHARGE OF REPAIRS,
MAINTENANCE AND SURVEYS SERVICES.

• ALSO, ON THIS KIND OF CONTRACT, THE CHARTERER GETS THE HIRE

5.-UNDER DERRICK : CHARTERER PAYS NECESSARY MEN ON SHORE & ON BOARD
THE LIGHTERS TO DO THE WORK OVER THERE, VESSEL ONLY HEAVING THE CARGO
ON BOARD.
IF CARGOES TAKE PLACE BY ELVATOR, IT IS PUT FREE IN VESSEL`S HOLD .
SHIPOWNER ONLY PAYS TRIMMIG EXPENSES. ANY PIECE / OR PACKAGE OVER (2)
TWO TONS WEIGHT SHALL BE LOADED, STOWED & DISCHARGED BY CHARTERERS AT
THEIR OWN RISK. THE CARGO MUST BE RECEIVED BY MERCHANTS AT THEIR RISK &
EXPENSES ALONGSIDE THE VESSEL NOT BEYOND THE REACH OF HER TACKLE
