Oxidation – Reduction

Redox Reactions

The term Oxidation means:

- Gaining of Oxygen

- Removal of Hydrogen

- Loss of Electrons
Examples for Oxidation
Redox Reactions
The term Reduction refers to:

- Removal of Oxygen

- Addition of Hydrogen

- Gain of Electrons
Examples for Reduction
Study tip:
to remember definition of
Redox in terms of electrons

OIL RIG:

Addition of Oxygen Removal of Oxygen

Removal of Hydrogen Addition of Hydrogen

Loss of Electrons Gain of Electrons

Metals undergo Oxidation Non-metals undergo reduction

Example : 1

(Due to loss of Oxygen atoms)

(Due to gain of Oxygen

atoms)
Example : 2
Oxidising Agent:

- It is otherwise called as Oxidizer or Oxidant.

- It is a chemical compound that readily transfers Oxygen atoms or gains

electrons.

- It gets reduced in a chemical reaction.

E,g., Oxidants: KMnO4 , K2Cr2O7 , HClO4

Reducing Agent:

- It is otherwise called as Reducer or Reductant.

- It is a chemical compound that readily accepts Oxygen atom or loses

electrons.

- It gets Oxidised in a chemical reaction.

E.g; Reductants : All metals such as Na, Al, Zn etc;
