science
Can you read it through all the
objects? No

Why is it so?

Some objects are opaque. We cannot see

through opaque objects.
Learning Objective:

I can:

• Investigate how light can pass through transparent materials

and is blocked by opaque materials.

• Sort materials into transparent or opaque materials.

• Make a prediction and see if it is right.

Introduction
Do all materials in the picture block
light? No

Can light pass through some

materials? Yes

Would such materials make

shadows? No

Do you think you can see through

all such materials? Yes
Key Learning Points

Materials that allow light to pass through them are called

transparent materials..
Example: glass, air, water

Transparent materials do not make a shadow.

We can see things clearly through transparent materials.

Group Activity
Opaque or transparent? (Learner’s book page 69)

Observe some materials and decide whether

they are opaque or transparent. Write your
Materials required:
predictions.

Some different
Test each material with a flashlight. Does
materials
light pass through?
A flashlight
Now record your results. Were your
predictions correct?
Individual activity
Answer the following questions:

No, transparent materials don’t have shadows.

2. Mia has two shadows. Why is this?

Because there are two light sources.

3. Why do shops use so much glass in their

front windows?
Because glass is transparent and we can see
through it clearly.
Think-pair Share

sunshade, would you use an
opaque or transparent
material?
opaque

Which material might make a

good sunshade?
cloth, plastic

Homework
Look at the pictures. Has each shadow been drawn correctly?

• Put a tick or cross

to say if the
shadow is right or
wrong.

• If the shadow is
wrong, draw it
correctly at the
