Telnet protocol
Network Monitoring and documentation
Dr. Mohammad Alshinwan

Overview of Telnet
• The Telecommunication Network Protocol (Telnet) is derived from
ARPANET released in 1969. It is the earliest Internet application.
• A Telnet connection is a Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) connection
used to transmit data with interspersed Telnet control information.
• Telnet uses the client/server model to present an interactive interface
that enables a terminal to remotely log in to a server.
• A user can log in to one host and then use Telnet to remotely log in to
and configure and manage multiple hosts without having to connect
each one to a terminal.
• Telnet uses the port 23.
Overview of Telnet
• The Telnet client/server mode
Overview of Telnet
• Telnet uses TCP for transmission.

• All Telnet echo information is displayed on the terminal.

• The server directly interacts with the pseudo terminal.

• The server and client transmit commands and data over the TCP connection.

• The client logs in to the server.

Telnet password and data captures
• Gns3 lab.
Telnet configuration
• Configure enable password or enable secret password on the router

1. Router>en
Router#config term
Router(config)#enable password admin

2. Router(config)#int VLAN 1
Router(config-if)#no shutdown
Telnet configuration
• Configure Telnet password on VTY lines and configure remote login.

3. Router(config)#
Router(config)#line vty 0 15
Router(config-line)#password cisco
Router(config-line)#login

• We can now telnet the router using the IP address of fa0/0 interface.
So, in the command prompt of the admin PC or any pc type telnet
192.168.1.1 then hit enter key.
Capture the telnet traffic
• Use the Wireshark on the link between the router and the switch
after the telnet.
