INTRODUCTION TO NAPS

Apprentice Act 1961 (amended in 2014 and in 2019) for training in any industry or establishment combines on-the-job training with
academic instructions for those entering the workforce. It aims at utilizing the existing training infrastructure in the industry for the
purpose of skill development of the youth of the country and benefit industry at the same time.
The Apprenticeship Programme in India under the Apprenticeship act 1961 is implemented by the Ministry of Skill Development and
Entrepreneurship (MSDE) at the National level. The MSDE has entrusted the Directorate General of Training [DGT] to implement
National Apprentice Promotion Scheme (NAPS) falling for “Designated Trades” mainly manufacturing sector and made the National
Skill Development Corporation [NSDC] with 38 Sector Skill Councils responsible for monitoring NAPS for “Optional Trades”.

FOR ORGANISATIONS
To promote apprenticeship training Govt. of India in August 2016 made it mandatory for
organisations with more than 30 employee strength to have apprentice.
