Modals

are verbs that cannot be used without


another verb.

can, could, may, will, would, shall,


should, must, and ought to.
Examples:

Yes, I will be honest from now on. (a promise)

Shall I return this medal? (requesting permission)

I may come tomorrow. (uncertainty)

Abby said she can write a composition. (ability)


My brother could play the cymbals when he was
younger. (able to do in the past)

Johndel ought to practice using the drums some


more. (advice/obligation/necessity)

She cannot write that well. She must have copied it.
(probability)
