Leadership can be defined as an ability to
influence others to follow.
There can be three styles of leading –
1. Directive
2. Participative
3. Free Rein
 Directive Style
Directive style of leading can be defined as a
leadership style in which leader has the power to
influence all decisions.
 Participative Style
Participate style of leading can be defined as a
leadership style in which leader invites the whole
team and employees for providing ideas,
discussion and suggestions.
The input of employees matters in this style.
 Free-Rein Style
Free-Rein style of leading can be defined as a
leadership style in which whole team not only
participates in decision making but also final
decision is left upon followers and team.
The complete freedom is provided to employees.
Importance of Styles of Leading
Styles of leading is deciding factor to prepare
leaders in any organization.
Good style of leading will foster employee morale,
job satisfaction, ability to take initiative,
subordinates development, positive attitude etc.
 Bad style of leading will curb creativity and
decision making ability, less participation, low
morale and low job satisfaction among
subordinates.
 Practical Applications
Whether it is school, college or university every
organization has one leader.
Such institutions need these styles of leadership
for better working of organization or institution.
In business organizations, a manager has to
involve all team members for completing a project
through participative style.
In military and security forces, mostly directive
style is used as leadership.
