What is DEATH ?
How does the reality of death define our
lives?
Death- commonly understood as the end
of bodily functions w/c signals the end of
the person’s life.
- it refers to the separation of the
body and the spirit (embodied spirit).
being material is bound by the laws of
time and space subject to growth , death
and decay.
Spirit – immaterial and continue to exist.
 This make a person’s life limited in time.
This has given rise to various expression
such as # YOLO (You Only Live Once).
 It is integral part of life.
 It can give acceptance of our temporality
about a sense of freedom in us.
 It can give us a clear purpose and focus to
on our activities.
How should I live my life before it finally
ends?
 Essence of freedom is SELF -
DETERMINATION – the capacity to
choose and act for oneself.
 FREEDOM to do well or not (live a
meaningful life)
 Definitely choose to spend our lives doing
good and reasonable things oe even go
against what is good.
 A person (you)- the author and
protagonist who determines the
development & conclusion of his or her
life story.
 The key idea is that we all have a vocation
to live life in the best possible way that
we can- by being excellent persons in our
own possible way. (best version of your
self)
 Temporal Existence/ Temporality
Challenges to make choices that will be
good for us and the people around us.
The word END means in 2 ways:

-life ends & nothing follows.
Telos – goals, purpose or fulfillment
(death)live a meaningful life, to be
virtuous & achieve excellence.
What makes you happy?
Sources of Happiness:
1. Noble Good – one which ispursued for its
own sake; it is good in itself
Ex. Love & Friendship
2. Useful Good- is considered good as long as
it serves as a means to an end; its goodness is
found only from what it can provide.
Ex. Money is good as it can buy you
something.
3. Pleasurable Good – is good so long as it
provides some form of pleasure, though it
does not have to be physical.
Ex. Friendship may be a noble good
because it is good to be a friend to
someone. Pursuing it with incorrect
intentions (befriending someone for
academic or career Advancement) makes it
only a useful good.

PHILOSOPHERS VIEW ON DEATH

SOCRATES THOMAS
EPICURUS
NAGEL

Whose view are you incline to

believe?
Socrates agues that he does not fear
death; indeed, to fear death is a sign of
ignorance. It is to claim to know what one
in fact does not know. Perhaps, Socrates
suggests, death is not a great evil after
all, but 'the greatest of all goods.
Epicurus argued, Death- cannot touch
us because “while we exist death is not
present, and when death is present we
no longer exist.” Since death cannot
touch us it cannot be bad. Fear is rational
only for something bad. So Epicurus
concludes that fearing death is pointless.
Death is not a physical condition,
instead, it is an unconscious void such
that it lacks metaphysical
conceptualization. After death the
deceased individual cannot be said to
exist, moreover, to speak of her as though
she still exists is irrational.
Why do people afraid of death?
People afraid of death because of:
 fearing the pain and loneliness of dying,
 fear of non-existence,
 fear of the unknown after death.
 the process of dying will be painful,
prolonged, and will reduce the quality of
life.
Thanatophobia
 is an intense fear of death or the dying
process.
 is an anxiety disorder that can disrupt
every aspect of your life.
