For appropriate ACTION

Vector Surveillance as IVM strategy
• To provide evidence for decision-making
• For evaluating programmes impact on vector
population
• For facilitating appropriate and timely decisions
regarding interventions
• Covers the vectors of all prevalent diseases

vector surveillance?

Entomological Indicators

• HI= no.of houses (+) for Aedes sp. x100%

House Index • total no. of houses inspected

• CI= no. of containers (+) for Aedes sp. x100%

Container Index • no. of containers inspected

• BI= no.of positi ve containers x100

Breteau Index • total no.of houses inspected

Person Index • no. of persons who slept the night before the survey

Adult Resting •Adult Resti ng Density = No. of female Aedes caught

Density • No. of households surveyed
Analysis

Dengue Sensitive/High Risk

HI ≥ 5% and/or BI ≥ 20; PPI ≥1%

Dengue Low Risk

HI < 5% and/or BI < 20; PPI < 1%
Interpretation

• Priority 1 – localities where an outbreak of DF/DHF had occurred

• Priority 2 – localities with high larval indices

HI ≥ 5% and/or BI ≥ 20; PI ≥ 1%

• Priority 3 – localities with relatively low larval indices

HI < 5% and/or BI < 20; PI < 1%

• Priority 4 – localities where there are no dengue cases and low

Aedes densities
Dissemination

• Information generated from routine dengue vector

surveillance will be most useful to the cost-effective
implementation of vector controls in the community

• The National Dengue Survey forms will be submitted to

the Regional Office and will be used as basis for insecticide
utilization and distribution

• Dengue Surveillance data will also be forwarded to the

DOH central office and will be the basis or justification for
procurement of insecticides.
