FIRE

DETECTION
AND ALARM
SYSTEM

A n automatic fire alarm system is
designed to detect the unwanted
presence of fire by monitoring
environmental changes associated with
combustion. In general, a fire alarm
system is either classified as
automatically actuated, manually
actuated, or both. Automatic fire alarm
systems can be used to notify people to
evacuate in the event of a fire or other
emergency, to summon emergency
services, and to prepare the structure and
associated systems to control the spread
of fire and smoke. 2

OBJECTIVES:
Upon completion of this lesson the fire
students/trainees will to be able to:

• Know the seven (7) types of Fire Alarm and

Communication System.
• Know the Fire alarm initiating devices and
detectors
• Know what are heat detectors
• Know what are visual alarms and why they are
required.
• Know what is voice evacuation system.
• Know what are the manually operated and

SEVEN TYPES OF
FIRE ALARM SYSTEMS
1. Household fire alarm systems
2. Protected premises (local) fire alarm systems
3. Emergency voice alarm communication
systems
4. Auxiliary (municipal) fire alarm systems
5. Remote supervising station fire alarm systems
6. Central station systems
7. Proprietary supervising station systems

Requirements for Residential
Fire Alarm Systems
a. At least one smoke alarm located on each
level of a residence.
b. One smoke alarm located in each bedroom.
c. One smoke alarm located in the corridor outside
each slipping area.
d. On a split level home, one smoke alarm is
sufficient for both ceiling elevations, provided
that smoke is free to distribute between levels.
Another arrangement permitted is the use of
battery- powered smoke alarms, without to a
permanent power supply.

Manually Operated Devices
A manual operated fire alarm
device requires the action of
individual to initiate a fire alarm
signal. The signal is transmitted to
the fire alarm control panel and the
appropriate notification appliances
are activated.

Devices
Audible, visible,
tactile, textual to
alert the occupants.
Audible or visible
signals are the most
common and may
utilize speakers to
deliver live or pre-
recorded instructions
to the occupants.
