Erosion

Objectives:

 At the end of this report, you will be able to understand what

is Weathering and Erosion,

 know their different types,

 And lastly, be able to comprehend how weathering and

erosion are related.

Introduction

As we observe our surroundings thoroughly, landforms are

continually changing as time goes on. Hills get distorted,
beaches lost their sand bars, river sides grew thinner and even
the pile of soil in your backyard flattened. The two main
reason of these events is what we call weathering and erosion.
What is Weathering?
z
 Weathering describes the breaking down or
dissolving of rocks and minerals on the
surface of the Earth.

 Water, ice, acids, salts, plants, animals, and

changes in temperature are all agents of
weathering.
z
2 types of Weathering:
• Mechanical Weathering
 Mechanical weathering, is also called
physical weathering and disaggregation,
cause it makes rocks crumble
physically.

 The main causes of mechanical

weathering are water, ice, salt/mineral
crystals, the release of pressure,
extreme temperatures, wind, and even
the actions of plants and animals.
z
• Chemical Weathering

 Chemical weathering involves

the interaction of rock with
mineral solutions (chemicals) to
change the composition of rocks.

 Involves the changes that some

substances can cause in the
surface of the rocks that make it
change it shape or color.
z
What is Erosion?

 Erosion is the action of surface processes that removes soil, rock,

or dissolved material from one location on the Earth’s crust, and
then transports it to another location where it is deposited.
z

2 types of Erosion
z
• Water Erosion

 Water erosion is the removal of soil by water and

transportation of the eroded materials away from the point of
removal.
z
Types of Water Erosion:
a. Rain drop or Splash Erosion
 The erosion due to the
impact of falling raindrops
on the soil surface leading to
the destruction of the crumb
structure is known as
raindrop or splash erosion.
z
b. Rill Erosion

 Rill erosion is a form of water

erosion in which the erosion
takes place through numerous
narrow and more or not so
straight channels called
streamlets or head cuts.
z
c. Gully Erosion

 Gully erosion occurs due

to the runoff of surface
water, causing the
removal of soil with
drainage lines.
z
d. Stream bank Erosion

 Stream Bank
erosion is
nothing but
washing up away
from banks of a
stream or a river.
z
• Wind Erosion

 Wind Erosion is the natural process of transportation and deposition of soil by

the wind.

 It is one of the processes leading to desertification.

1 type of Wind Erosion
z
Sheet Erosion

 It is the uniform
removal of soil in
thin layers from the
land surface caused
by the wind.
