DRILL: Tell if the following statements is True or False.

__________ 1. Plants also defend themselves through their

body structure.
__________ 2. Rafflesia and Durian protect themselves by
releasing a foul order.
__________ 3. It is not dangerous to hold a Poison Ivy plant
__________ 4. Cactus protect itself from predator through
it’s fleshy stem.
__________ 5. A Mimosa plant ( Makahiya plant ) protect
itself from it’s enemy by closing it’s leaves
when touch.
RECALL:
 Plants also have their own defense
mechanism just like animals.
 Defense mechanism is needed in
order for organisms to protect
themselves from their enemies and
predators.
 Defense mechanisms among
organisms are important to ensure
survival of the organisms in their
environment.
• Hi! I’m Sid the seed . Last time we have
discussed the factors that can contribute
to plant growth. Can you name what are
these factors?

• That’s great you can still remember the

factors that affect plant growth. Those
factors also affects me so that I can grow
into a young plant.

For today we will be discussing the process

on how will I grow into a young plant and
that is through Germination.
Before we proceed with the germination
process let me tell you first the important parts
of a seed.
1. Embryo- It is the young plant inside the
seed.
2. Cotyledon – Food Storage/ the food for the
embryo plant inside the seed.
3. Seed coat – Protection of the seed.
Parts of a Embryo Plant
1. Epicotyl – It is the first leaves of the baby
plant or embryo. The first 2 leaves of the
embryo plant is called plumule.
2. Hypocotyl – It is the stem of the baby
plant or embryo.
3. Radicle – It is the first roots of the baby
plant or embryo.
Germination is the process
in which the embryo or baby
plant gets energy from the
stored food(Cotyledon) in
the seed and starts to grow.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
 Some animals such as fishes, birds,
turtles and frogs lays egg which
contain their offspring.
 Animals that lay eggs are called egg-
laying animals(Oviparous).
 While other animals including dogs,
pigs, cats and humans grow their
babies inside the female’s womb and
give birth to them alive. These
animals are called Viviparous.
LET’S SUM –UP:
 Germination is the process in which the
seed grows into a young plant.
 A seed consist of 3 important parts namely
the seed coat, cotyledon and embryo.
 Embryo inside the seed have 3 important
parts namely the epicotyl, hypocotyl and
radicle.
 It takes 21 days for the chick to hatch from
it’s eggs.
Let’s Answer: Tell if the following statements is
True or False.
_____1. The young plant inside the seed is called embryo.
_____2. Seed doesn’t need water to germinate.
_____3. The cotyledon serves as a food for the young plant
inside the seed.
_____4. Animals that hatched from eggs are called viviparous.
_____5. It takes upon 21 days for the chick to hatch from the
egg.
