INTRODUCTION

The exploration, production, and consumption of oil and petroleum products are
increasing worldwide, and the threat of oil pollution increases accordingly.

Accidents can happen during any of these exploration, production, and

transportation steps or at storage tanks.

Oil spills are either directly or indirectly caused by human error/ illegal activities,
and 20–40% caused by equipment failure or malfunction.
What is Oil Spillage

Oil Spillage is an accidental release of oil into a

body of water, as from a tanker, offshore drilling

or underwater pipeline, often presenting a hazard

to marine life, the land around the area and

environment.
What causes oil spillage

In Nigeria, fifty percent (50%) of oil spills is due to

corrosion, twenty eight (28%) percent to sabotage and

twenty one (21%) percent to oil production operations, one

(1%) percent of oil spills is due to engineering drills,

inability to effectively control oil wells, failure of machines.

Pipeline Vandalization

Vandalization is a destructive action which involves a malicious and deliberate destruction of

somebody else's property

In this context
Pipeline Vandalization is a forceful and Illegal way of Obtaining Petroleum Products by creating
holes along the transporting pipelines.

OR

Pipeline vandalism, is the deliberate act of damaging

petroleum pipelines with the sole aim of stealing crude oil and
associated petroleum products.
THE EFFECT OF OIL SPILLS ON LAND, WATER BODIES AND MANGROVES

 Degradation of the environment is one of the worst disasters

that have befallen the areas where pipelines have been
vandalized.

 Raging fire have destroyed farmlands and forest thereby

reducing arable land for farming

 Spills into water ways has destroys marine and aquatic life,
flora, fauna, resort centers and result in ground water
contamination

 Aquatic Wildlife and their habitats are affected by Oil Spillage

by means of physical
contact, ingestion, absorption and Inhalation.
Human Effects of Oil Spillage through Pipepline vandalism

 Lack of portable water

 Depleted arable land for farming

 Polluted water, endangering aquatic life and loss of income through fishing

 Loss of lives through explosions while scooping fuel from vandalized pipelines
STEPS TOWARS IMPROVING THE INTEGRITY AND SAFETY
OF PIPLINES

 Introduction of Aerial Satellite Monitoring of Pipeline Installations

 Frequent checks for pipeline integrity and complete overhaul of Aging Pipelines

by the Oil company

 Quick response to oil spillage and pipeline vandalism

SOLUTION OF OIL SPILLS ON LAND, MANGROVE AND WATER BODIES

Bioremediation: Bioremediation is a technique

that is useful to remove spilled oil under

certain geographical and climatic conditions.

Bioremediation is a proven alternative

treatment too that can be used to trat certain

aerobic oil contaminated environment.
