Basic types of Chemical

Reactions
What is Chemical Reaction?

• Chemical reactions occur when chemical bonds

between atoms are formed or broken.

• The substances that go into a chemical reaction are

called the REACTANTS.

• The substance produced at the end of the reaction

are known as the PRODUCTS .
How can you tell if a chemical
reaction occurred?

Types of Reactions
• There are fo ur types of chemical reactions we will
use:

1.Synthesis reactions
2.Decomposition reactions
3.Single replacement
reactions 4 .Double replac ement
reac tions
1. Synthesis reactions
DESCRIPTION:
• Synthesis reactions occur when two
simple substances combine and form a
single compound

A + B  AB
1. Synthesis reactions
G E N E R A L FORMULA: EXAMPLES:
• reac tant + reac tant  • FORMATION O F WATER
produc t
2H 2 + O2 
•A + B  AB 2H 2 O
• FORMATION O F
CARBON DIOXIDE

C+ O 2  CO 2
Form ing
water
2. Decomposition reactions
DESCRIPTION:
• Decomposition reactions are opposite
of
synthesis reactions. They occur when a
compound breaks up into simpler
compounds

AB  A + B
Decomposition reactions
G E N E R A L FORMULA: EXAMPLES:
• Product  reactant + reactant • D ECO M P O F WATER

• AB A + B 2 H 2 O  2H 2 +
O2
• D ECO M P O F HgO

2 HgO  2Hg +
O2
3. Single Replacement Reactions
DESCRIPTION:
• Single Replacement Reactions occur when
one element replaces another in a compound

A replaced
B on the
product
BC + A  B + AC side to
form A C
and B ends
up alone
Single Replacement reactions
G E N E R A L FORMULA: E X A M P L E S :
• element + compound  • Fe + Cu S O 4 → FeSO 4 +
compound + element
Cu
•A + B C  AC + B • Mg + 2 HCl → MgCl 2 +
•A + B C  BA + C H2
4. Double Replacement Reactions
• DESCRIPTION:

Double Replacement Reactions occur when a metal

replaces a metal in a compound and a nonmetal replaces
a nonmetal in a compound forming two NEW
COMPOUNDS

AB + C D  C B + AD
4. Double Replacement Reactions
G E N E R A L FORMULA: EXAMPLES:
• compound + compound  • Think about it like “foil”ing in algebra
compound + compound
• Examples:
• AB + C D  AD + AgNO 3 + NaCl  AgCl + NaNO 3
CB

K 2 SO 4 + Ba(NO3 )2  KNO 3 + BaSO 4

THE GEN. CHEM Quiz Bee

For this activity, group yourself by 4, each group must

prepare 5 pieces of ANY paper, I will give you a series
of questions and you will answer it by raising your
paper in the air with the answer on it, each question
will be given a 7 SECONDS for your group to answer.
REMINDER: WRONG SPELLING WRONG
NO PAPER IN THE AIR MEANS WRONG have fun
