Functions of
Communication
Definition
It refers to how people use language for different
purposes. Furthermore, it is how language is
affected by different time, place, and situation used
to control the behavior of people, used to regulate
the nature and number of activities people engage
in.
1. Regulation/Control
If the speaker’s purpose is to control others by
managing their behavior
As a function of communication means being
able to use language, gestures, and emotions to
manage individual or group activities
It can be observed either verbal or nonverbal
communication
Verbal and non-verbal cues used
in Regulation/Control:
a. VERBAL CUES -in this function of communication, words use
are usually direct orders, requests, etc. it is meant to regulate and
control other people’s behavior.
b. NON-VERBAL CUES -the tone and bodily action that accompany
the words are authoritative and firm. Eye contact is direct. In our
culture, these cues may be softened for children and the elderly.
Verbal and non-verbal cues used
in Regulation/Control:
EXAMPLES: *Announcement from the barangay chairman
that the community will start segregating their
garbage.
* Asking someone to be quiet
* A parent telling a child not to misbehave
* A police officer directing pedestrians not to
jaywalk, instead use the pedestrian lane in
crossing

2. Social Interaction
The most familiar and the primary reason why
people communicate .
Social interaction allows people to be connected
with one another
A family becomes close not because they live
under the same roof , but because each member
interacts with another.
Verbal and non-verbal cues used
in Social Interaction:
a. VERBAL CUES – the words normally use
in this function is informal and casually
delivered.
b.NON-VERBAL CUES - the tone is friendly,
teasing and the bodily action is relaxed

EXAMPLES: *Family members having dinner
while sharing their experiences on
what happened to their respective
work/school
* Friends hanging out and sharing
stories
* A new student approach his/her
seatmate and later on became
friends

3. Motivation
This is when the Speaker’s purpose is to persuade
or try to persuade another person to change his/her
opinion, attitude, or behavior.
