METHODS OF

IMPROVING
MEMORY
PRESENTED BY

INTRODUCTION

• Memory refers to the psychological processes of acquiring, storing,

retaining, and later retrieving information.
• Memories form due to changes in brain neurons.
• Memories are created through the connections that exist between these
neurons.
• Sometimes information is simply lost from memory.
• Sometimes it was never stored correctly in the first place.
• Some memories compete with one another, making it difficult to
remember certain information.
• Try reading a passage of complex material aloud.
• Try to teach the information to a friend or family
1. • Instructing others can enhance your understanding

Examples
information
aloud • Presentation that we give in the class is like teaching a
whole class so by this we memorize easily.

• When I was learning the dialogues for a play; to

memorize those dialogues I started to read those
dialogues aloud which helped me remember them
easily.

• Similarly when a difficult topic was explained to my

friend it helped me memorize the topic easily.
2. • Less time is needed to memorize information
Rhythm as • Recitation fixes the material more permanently
• Recitation has a stronger impact on long-term memory
an aid to than on short-term memory
memory Examples
Thirty days hath September,
April, June, and November.
All the rest have 31,
• In fourteen hundred and nine-two,
Excepting February alone,

Columbus sailed the ocean blueAnd that has 28 days clear,

And 29 in each leap year.
• When I was in class 5 or 6 I had learned a line by
including melody in it and the line is “Robert the Bruce
was the king of Scotland.”
3. A memory and learning technique that involves the formation of
Elaborate associations and connections between new information and
knowledge that has already been learned.
and Examples
Rehearse • Imagine meeting someone whose name is Sandy, then making
an association with a sandy beach to remember that name.

• Similarly there is another character in the play who is rude

and her name is Gertrude and you can see that there is “rude”
present in the name.
4. • Repetition of the information over and over again
• Summarize the information in your own words
Recitation • It enables the brain to permanently store the information

Examples

• In Madarsas student recites Quran or any Ayah again and

again to memorize it.

• By reciting Surah Kahaf on every Friday I have memorized

some Ayah of that Surah.

• In nursery, teachers used to repeat for example “A for Apple, B

for Ball, C for Cat” again and again by which students
memorize it in their brain permanently.
• A mnemonic is a word, short poem, or sentence that is
5. intended to help you remember things
Use • Mnemonics is the practice of assigning words or rhymes to
Mnemonic represent information.

Rhymes • It aids the memory through auditory stimuli.

• For e.g:
• Reinforcing information in your mind

6. • By reinforcing information at regular intervals,

you're more likely to access the information when
Try spaced you need to remember it.
repetition
• Chunking, or the memory tree method, is the process of
classifying, or branching, things into groups.
7. • Involves taking small units of info and grouping them
Chunk into larger units
Information
8. • Acronyms offer another mnemonic tool to enhance your
memory
Create • It is made up by taking the first letters of all the key
acronyms words or ideas you need to remember and creating a
new word out of them
Implementation in psycholinguistics

• Psycholinguistics is the study of the relationships between linguistic behavior

and psychological processes.

• Memory is an integral part of human cognition.

• Language could not exist without memory, in all its forms: working memory,
implicit memory, semantic memory, and episodic memory.

• Therefore memory allows individuals to recall and draw upon past events to
frame their understanding of and behavior within the present.

• This interconnection between memory and language relates to psycholinguistics

which highlights the importance of a good memory
Scope in psycholinguistics

Comprehension: To understand concepts for a longer periods,

memory skills are required

Production: Language production involves the retrieval of

information from memory

Acquisition: To perceive and comprehend language, efficient

memory is required
