HOW TO CRITIQUE

AN ARTWORK
PART 4. JUDGING
THE WORK
• Decide whether you think the work is successful
or not. Your goal here is not necessarily to
decide whether the art is good or bad. Instead,
focus on whether you think the work is
successful.
Following concepts:
· Do you think the artwork shows what the
artist wanted it to express?
· Did the artist use their tools and techniques
well?
· Is the artwork original, or does it replicate
other works of art?
2. Explain how you are judging the work. If
you decide on a few aspects of an artwork to
judge, clearly state the focus of your
evaluation. Consider on how it was well
organized, how well was it technically done,
and how successfully it portrayed the
intended mood or themes.
3. Summarize why you think the work is
successful or unsuccessful. In a few
sentences, explain your judgment of the
work. Give specific reasons for your
judgment, using your interpretation and
analysis of the work.
