GRAPHIC ARTS

MATERIALS AND TECHNIQUE

GRAPHIC ARTS

Graphic Arts is a form

of two-dimensional art.
It can refer
specifically to
illustration and
various printmaking
techniques.

(Guillermo
et.al.,1988,p.30)
ENGRAVING
FOUR MAIN ENGRAVING TECHNIQUES
1. Relief
2. Intaglio
3. Planographic method
4. Serigraphy
1. RELIEF

- A process where
parts of woodblock
or metal plate that
are not meant to be
seen in the final
design are removed
using an engraving
knife.
(Guillermo et.
Al.,1988,p.30)
1. RELIEF

- It can be done
using materials
such as wood,
rubber, or even
potato cuts.
(Guillermo et.
Al.,1988,p.30)

prints
2. INTAGLIO

- A process where the

incised or carved
parts of the metal
plate is filled with
ink.
- It includes etching,
aquatint and
mezzotint.
(Guillermo et.
Al.,1988,p.30)
2. INTAGLIO

- In etching, the copper

plate is coated with
beeswax, asphalt, and
resin. The design will
be etched on the surface
uncovering parts of the
plate. Acid is then used
to cut on the uncovered
parts of the metal
plate. (Mittler,
2005,p.60)
2. INTAGLIO
- In mezzotint, the tonal
effect is made by a metal
tool called “rocker” which
will be rocked back and
forth to the metal plate,
creating tiny dots that
can retain the ink.
- (Guillermo
et.al.,1988,p.30)
2. INTAGLIO
- In aquatint, the surface of
the metal plate is covered
with rosin powder. The acid
bites on the areas between
the rosin powders making
this process capable of
producing works with a wide
range of tonal value.
- (Guillermo
et.al.,1988,p.30-31)
2. INTAGLIO
- Contemporary artist
Brenda Fajardo, Imelda
Cajipe-Endaya, Ben
Cabrera, Orlando
Castillo work on
etching and aquatint,
while Fil dela Cruz
and Manuel Rodriguez
Sr. work in mezzotint.
- (Guillermo
et.al.,1988,p.31)
3. SURFACE/
PLANOGRAPHIC PRINTING

- A printing method,
which uses flat
surface such as a
limestone or a
metal plate.
- (Guillermo
et.al.,1989,p.30-
31)
3. SURFACE/
PLANOGRAPHIC
PRINTING

- Lithography- The image is

drawn on a metal plate using
a greasy crayon, which is
then treated with an acidic
solution, making the
uncovered areas of the
surface resistant to ink.
(Mittler,2005,p.61)
4. SERIGRAPHY

- Serigraphy or silkscreen
is a printing technique
using a fine silk screen
stretched in a wooden
frame and masks of the
paper.
(Guillermo
et.al.,1988,p.32)
4. SERIGRAPHY
- Multiple colors can be
applied using different
masks to cover
particular areas in the
design. It can also be
achieved by laying one
color over the other.
-Silkscreen printing is
most commonly used in T-
shirt design and posters.
(Guillermo
et.al.,1988,p.32)
PHOTOGHRAPHY, VIDEO
AND DIGITAL ART
MATERIALS AND TECHNIQUE
1. PHOTOGRAPHY
In spite of the
accessibility of
cameras,
photographers still
have to choose the
subject matter,
lighting, point of
view, and even the
process of printing.

2.VIDEO

Video is a medium of
capturing and
displaying moving
images, recorded in
videotape or a
cassette.
(Mittler,2005,p.63)
2.VIDEO

Videos have
been used
in film and
television
industries.
3. DIGITAL ART
Digital media are
types of
materials that
can be created,
transformed and
processed by a
computer.
(Mittler,2005,p.5

3. DIGITAL ART
Computers have become
a versatile tool for
artists; providing
them with flexibility
in creating,
manipulating, and
reproducing works.
