BRAKE POWER CERTIFICATE(BPC)
&
GDR CHECK

What is BPC ?
 Brake Power Certificate is a document issued
by Carriage & Wagon department for every
moving train (Coaching or Goods) at the
originating station/Nominated examination
point after necessary examination.
 Issued in Prescribed Form Mech V5.
For Goods trains mainly following
Three types of BPCs are issued
CC rake BPC
Premium BPC
Intensive (End to End) BPC
CC Rake BPC
 Formed predominantly out of off POH, off ROH & New
wagons.
 Examination normally done in nominated depot.
 Validity: 8000kms or 35 days
7500kms or 35 days
6000kms or 30 days
 However, some railways extends the validity of particular
rakes on trail basis from time to time.
 Brake Power Percentage:
 At originating station-100%
 At an enroute station-90%
 Prescribed time for examination-6 hrs
Premium Rake BPC
 Formed with the wagons in sound mechanical
condition.
 Validity-12+3 days (if loaded)
 To avoid examination in loaded condition a
grace period of 3 days permitted.
 Brake Power Percentage:
 At Originating station-95%
 At an enroute station-75%
 Prescribed time for examination-4.5 hrs.
Intensive(End to End BPC)
 Examination is preferably done in empty
condition after unloading.
 Done for ordinary end to end rake.
 Validity-One Trip loading
 Brake Power Percentage:
 At originating station-90%
 At an enroute station-75%
 Prescribed time for examination-3hrs
Circumstances When BPC becomes invalid

 When the validity period of rake has expired.


 If integrity of the rake is disturbed by more
than 4 VUs. (Exception-BLCA/B wagons-5)
 In case of CC rake-If the distance is not
recorded, BPC will be deemed valid for 20
days only.
 When an intensively examined loaded train
has been unloaded or back loaded at a
station/siding.
 When a train with valid BPC, loaded or empty,
is stabled at a way side station for more than
96 hrs.
 If a CC/Premium rake train is stabled for more
than 24 hrs at a TXR examination point.
GDR CHECK
GDR Check points
 Guard & Loco Pilot will check the following aspects
jointly, LP from station side & Guard from offside:
 Rake integrity.
 All CBCs are properly coupled and locked.
 All angle cocks are in open condition except
rearmost which should be in closed condition.
 Empty load handle is in proper condition as per
situation.
 No loose fittings/hanging parts which may
endanger safe running of train.
 Hand brakes are in released condition.
 Doors of wagons are closed and locked properly.
 Guard and LP will also take note of any other
abnormality(Uneven load, body bulge, height of
the consignment etc), which is obvious and may
endanger safety.
 Continuity of brake pipe pressure is confirmed
through VHF/Whistle code before starting.
 Brake Power Test.
 Prepare GDR form in triplicate (SM/YM, Guard,
LP)
Procedure to be followed to clear a load from a non-TXR
point
1. When the BPC is valid:
Loco to be attached and adequate pressure to be created in
engine and brake van.
Guard & LP shall jointly check the train and ensure the
following:
LP to check from the station side and the Guard from off side.
All couplings and brake pipes are properly coupled.
All angle cock except the last is in open condition.
Empty load handle is in proper position.
Ensure there is no loose fittings/hanging part like push pull rod,
brake bam, safety bracket, brake blocks etc.
All the hand brakes are released.
Doors of wagons are closed and locked/secured.
 Thereafter Guard to prepare a memo in triplicate
jointly with LP with following details:
• Date
• Train description and number
• From/to
• Engine no
• Engine attached at
• Total load
 Guard should obtain SM/YM’s endorsement on two of
these copies.
 One copy each for LP & Guard.
 Third copy to be handed over to the SM/YM.
2. When the BPC is invalid:
 LP&GD will take all actions as above.
 They will ascertain the brake power with following
result:
• Total number of cylinders
• Total number of working cylinders
• Percentage of brake power
• Air pressure in engine
• Air pressure in brake van
 Triplicate memo to be prepared as above.
 Train will proceed to the next examination point in
direction of movement of the train.
Situations when GDR check to be done to clear a stabled load

 NOTE:
1. If a rake is unloaded/ back loaded/tippled at
non TXR point, then GDR check should be
done. Brake power check is not required
provided the rake is not stabled for more
than 24 hrs.
2. Door closing should be ensured by Guard
before drawing/starting the freight rake from
loading/unloading point as per the G & SR
4.34.03. Thereafter, the Guard and LP shall fill
the GDR form in triplicate.
Types of Coaching BPC
 End to end BPC: If to and fro distance is more
than 3500 km(ICF)/4000 km (LHB).
 Round trip BPC:
 If to and fro distance is less than 3500
km(ICF)/4000 km (LHB).
 For short distance Express or Passenger trains
(with toilet), 3500 km or 10 days whichever is
earlier.
 For short distance passenger train in different
rake link (without toilet), 3500 km or 96 hrs
whichever is earlier.
