    THE PROBLEM: A LACK OF AWARENESS
    • Many casualties were caused as curious
    bystanders ignored warnings
    • Once they could see the tsunami it may have
    been too late
    • Survivors expressed their regret for not
    taking the threat seriously enough
    • Survivors wished to improve others‘
    awareness to avoid more casualties in the
    future

    IMPROVING DISASTER AWARENESS
    • Tokyo Rinkai Disaster Park is a training center
    for disaster prevention
    • Offers a survival simulation for the first 72
    hours after an Earthquake
    • Visitors can experience evacuations procedures
    and see damage done to buildings and services
    first hand
    • They can also experience how shelters operate
    in terms of distributing rations, resting areas etc.
    • Experience is limited to a small scale and
    limited by props

    VR IN MUSEUMS
    • Not everyone has the ability to make use of VR in their
    home environment, so it is more suitable as a public service
    • Museums have been moving towards making exhibits more
    interactive
    • ‘MetaWalkers‘ offers installations of VR exhibits for
    museums
    • Japan has a long history of experiencing natural disasters
    and disaster mitigation R&D
    • Museum exhibits spread awareness and are accessible to
    locals and tourists alike
