occurs. The Philippines experiences dozens of earthquakes a day. PHILVOLCS recorded that 38
earthquakes occurred on January 24 across near and on Philippine land, ranging from 1.4 to 5.9
magnitude quakes from different depths. Due to a lack of awareness and alarm in today's
society, we are not aware when an earthquake occurs, especially those that are smaller in
magnitude or if the epicenters that are farther away from us.
All types of earthquakes are dangerous and unsafe, this is due to the fact that an earthquake can
cause significant destruction even when we are unaware of it and feel unaffected. Being unaware
of an earthquake, our awareness won’t be sharp and we would lower our guard. We won’t be
protecting ourselves from potentially falling debris which may cause injuries, property damage
or even death.
The researchers will design a device that will light up and alarm when a seismic wave is
detected, but is not loud enough to scare and frighten people around it. The product/project will
focus on lower intensity earthquakes, so that those around it are sure that an earthquake is indeed
happening and it isn’t just them feeling the ground shaking.
This device is specifically designed for the Philippines and its public spaces like schools,
hospitals, and other locations where many people congregate. It is designed for people that
might be vulnerable to earthquakes. The researchers want to make the device into reality so that
this can help the community become more aware of and ready for disasters as they are
happening. Also, to reduce the number of earthquake-related fatalities.
The goal, though, is farfetched, is to make an earthquake version of a fire alarm, that
automatically goes off for and affordable price and to have these kinds of devices or something
similar, be mandatory for schools and hospitals, or even in every building in the Philippines
because we are in an earthquake prone area.
MATERIALS:
This project's development starts with a detailed inventory of the supplies required to create the
prototype. The following are the step-by-step instructions:
Prepare the alligator and the wires. Use a soldering pen and lead to solder the copper wire. The
sharp ends of the screws should be facing outward. Locate a laundry clip that would work and
use a soldering pen to create holes on both sides. Next, construct a platform out of cardboard to
hold the marble and adhere it to the illustration board. Apply a flexible wire to the nut to connect
it to the dynamo. Connect the wires to the batteries, clip, dynamo, and led as shown in the
demonstration. Glue the platform, batteries, lanera, and dynamo to the illustration board. Hot
glue and thread are used to hold the marble in place. The end outcome of all these stages is the
finished item.
In conclusion, although being only a prototype, the Seismic Wave Alert System can achieve its
goals because it has the capability of warning the people inside the room it is installed in when
an earthquake happens. This kind of system can direct people to safety and help them react to
earthquakes more effectively. The Seismic Wave Alert System still has to be greatly improved.
The researchers are committed to explore and enhance the alert system for the benefit of people
because they can see that it has the potential and can perform well.
