ANGLE SUM THEOREM

ANGLE SUM THEOREM

All the angles inside a triangle must add up to
180 degrees.

A right triangle also adds up to

180 degrees, but one angle is
always 90 degrees. Usually, it is
in the L shaped corner.
Example 1: Find the missing angle.

90 + 52 + x = 180

142 + x = 180

x = 38
Solve for x, then find the missing angles.
What value of x will make the triangle a right
triangle?
6x+6=90

6x=84
x=14
Find x, then the missing angles:

TRIANGLE PARTS
RELATIONSHIP THEOREM
Triangle parts relationship theorem
If one side of a triangle is
longer than the other side,
then the angle opposite
the longer side is larger
than the angle opposite
the shorter side.
“The size of the side is dependent upon the angle it is
across from.” (Largest side is across from largest
angle)

THEOREM
Triangle Inequality
Theorem
The sum of the lengths of two sides of a triangle is
Greater than the length of the third side and the
difference of the lengths of two sides of a triangle is Less
than the length of the third side.
Triangle Inequality
Theorem
Estimating Missing Sides
Steps
1. Subtract the two Known Sides
2. Add the two Known Sides
Set It Up Like This
Subtracted Value < Possible Missing Side < Added Value
Let a=10 and b=4,
What are the possible lengths of side c?

Subtracted Value < Possible Missing Side < Added Value

10 – 4 < c < 10 + 4
6 < c < 14
So, c is between 6 and 14 units
Given these two sides find a range of
possible 3rd sides : 7 & 9
Given these two sides find a range of
possible 3rd sides : 6 & 10
Given these two sides find a range of
possible 3rd sides : 6 & 10
Can these side measurements represent a
triangle? 2, 10, 12
Subtracted Value < Possible Missing Side < Added Value
Pick any two sides and save the 3rd
10 - 2 < x < 10 + 2
8 < x < 12
Plug the 3rd side in as “x”
8 < 12 < 12
Is this a true statement?
This is not a triangle!
Can these side measurements represent a
triangle? 18, 12, 6
Can these side measurements represent a

Equilateral
A triangle where all three of its sides are the same length…
Two sides of an equilateral triangles are labeled
15 inches and 2x-3 inches. Find x.
If there is an equilateral triangle and one of the
angles is measured to be 2(2x+6) degrees, find x.
The measure of
∠BAC=(5x−20)°
What is the value of x?

This an equilateral triangle so..

All the angles are equal to 60 degrees.

So…. Angle BAC has to be equal to 60

5x – 20 = 60

5x = 80

x = 16
Isosceles An isosceles triangle is a
triangle with at least two
Triangles congruent sides.

Has two base angles and

one vertex angle.
Isosceles triangle theorem
• If two sides of a
triangle are congruent,
then the base angles
of an isosceles triangle
are congruent.
I do!
If the sum of the two base angles of an isosceles triangle are 108
degrees, then what is the measure of each angle in the triangle?
We do!
Solve for X, and then find the measure of each angle.
Angle A is Congruent to Angle C
What are the measures of the base Angle A = Angle C
angles and the vertex of the 4x + 9 = 8x -15
isosceles triangle?   +15 +15
-4x -4x

24 = 4x
x=6

4(6)+9
24+9
The base angles are 33 Degrees

Angle A + Angle B + Angle C = 180

33+ Angle B + 33 =180
66 + Angle B = 180
Angle B = 114
The Vertex Angle is 114 Degrees
