DEVELOPMENT

 What are the steps in solving problems?

GEORGE Polya’s 4-steps rule can facilitate its solution.

1. Explore the problem carefully and choose a variable for an unknown

quantity. If possible, express other unknown variables in terms of this variable

PROBLEM 1
A proposed train fare would charge₱ 20.00 for the first 5 km of travel and ₱ 0.75 for each
additional kilometer over the proposed fare.

a. Find the fare function f(x) where x represents the number of kilometers traveled.
b. Find the proposed fare for distance of 45 km.

SOLUTION:
a. f ( x )=20 for 0< x ≤5
Let x = number of kilometers traveled
x-5 = number of kilometers traveled over and above 5 km
f ( x )=20+ 0.75( x−5)
f ( x )=20+ 0.75 x −3.75¿
f ( x )=20+ 0.75 x for x>5
The fare function is f(x)= ₱ 16.25+ ₱ 0.75 x

b. f ( 45 )=16.25+ 0.75 ( 45 )=16.25+33.75

f ( 45 )=50
The proposed fare for 45-km travel is ₱ 50.00

a. Construct a table of values and sketch a graph that will show a mode of payment for
customers who may spend h number of hours in watching PPV events.
b. What is the monthly bill of a customer who watched 25 hours of PPV events?
c. What is the monthly bill of a customer who watched 12.1 hours of PPV events?
d. What is the monthly bill of a customer watched 0.2 hours of PPV events?

SOLUTION:
a. The table values that shows the mode of payment for customers who may spend h
number of hours in watching PPV events is given below.

Monthly Cable Total

Connection Fee Amount of Payment
PPV f (x)
0< x ≤1 ₱500 (₱125)(1) ₱625
1< x ≤ 2 ₱500 (₱125)(2) ₱750
2< x ≤ 3 ₱500 (₱125)(3) ₱875
3< x ≤ 4 ₱500 (₱125)(4) ₱1,000
4 <x≤ 5 ₱500 (₱125)(5) ₱1,125
. . . .
. . . .
. . . .

b. The monthly bill of a customer who watched 25 hours of PPV events can be represented by
24 < x ≤ 25 . The total payment is ₱500 + (₱125)(5) =₱500 + ₱ 1,325 = ₱ 3, 625.

c. The monthly bill of a customer who watched 12.1 hours of PPV events can be represented
by 12 < x ≤ 13 . The total payment is ₱500 + (₱125)13) =₱500 + ₱ 1,625 = ₱ 2, 125.

c. The monthly bill of a customer who watched 0.2 hours of PPV events can be represented
by 0 < x ≤ 1 . The total payment is ₱500 + (₱125)(1)= ₱500 + ₱ 125 = ₱ 625.

PROBLEM 4
Suppose that a community tax law reads as follows:

Annual Gross Earnings Community Tax Due

Less than or equal to ₱120,000 ₱0
More than ₱120,000 but not over 1% of income over ₱120,000
₱240,000
Over ₱240,000 5% of income over ₱120,000

a. Represent the income tax payment schedule using a piecewise defined function.
b. Determine the domain of a function.
c. What is the community tax due given an annual gross earning of ₱ 48,340? ₱160,000?
₱435,000?

SOLUTION:
a. For piecewise defined function that represents the given income tax payment:

Let x be the annual gross earnings and T(x) be the community tax due.
0if 0< x ≤ 120,00

{ }
T ( x )= 0.01 ( x−120,000 ) if x >120,000< x ≤240,000
0.05 ( x−120,000 ) if x>240,000

b. The domain of the function is { x∨x >0 }

c. The community tax due given an annual gross earning of ₱ 48,340 is 0.
For a gross income of ₱ 160, 000, the community tax due is 0.01(₱ 160,000-
₱ 120,000)= ₱ 400
For a gross income of ₱ 435, 000, the community tax due is 0.05(₱ 435,000-
₱ 120,000)= ₱ 15,750
