Dynamics – refers to the volume
of a sound or note. Loudness or
softness of the sound.
Melody – also known as tune,
voice or line, is a linear
succession of musical tones that
the listener perceives as a single
entity.
Texture – it is how the tempo,
melodic, and harmonic materials
are combined in a composition. It
is how the layers of sound within
a piece of music interact.
Tempo – it is the speed of the
underlying beat. It can be fast,
moderate or slow.

1. Sonata
• it came from the word “sonare” which means “to make
sound.”
• a musical composition composed of multi-movement for
solo instrument or a small instrumental ensemble.
• the term sonare is applied to a variety of works for a solo
instrument such as keyboard or violin.
1. Sonata Movements
• 1st movement: Allegro – fast movement
• 2nd movement: Andante – slow movement
• 3rd movement: Minuet – it is in a three-four time and
in moderate.
2. Sonata Allegro
- The most important musical instructure that
was developed during the classical era consists
of three distinct sections:

3. Concerto
• A work designed for solo instrument and the
orchestra.
• This classical form is intended to emphasize the
individuality of the solo instrument and to exhibit the
virtuosity and interpretative abilities of the performer.
• Ex. Violin, cello, clarinet, bassoon, trumpet, horn,
piano

3. Concerto Movements
• 1st movement: Fast – Sonata allegro form with expositions of the
orchestra and then by the soloist.
• 2nd movement: Slow – has more ornamentation than the first
movement
• 3rd movement: Fast – finale, usually in a form of rondo, resembling
the last movement of the symphony and usually a short cadenza is
used.
• Rondo – a musical form with recurring theme, often found in the
final movement of sonata and concerto.
4. Symphony
• sinfonia, harmonious sounding together
• an elaborate musical composition for the whole
orchestra with generally four movements.
4. Symphony Movements
• 1st movement: Fast – sonata allegro form
• 2nd movement: Slow – gentle , lyrical, typical ABA form
or theme and variation
• 3rd movement: Medium/Fast – uses a dance form
(minuet or scherzo)
• 4th movement: Fast – typical rondo or sonata form
5. Classical Opera
• Opera – a drama set to music where singers and
musicians performs in a theatrical setting.
2 Distincts
Opera Seria or Serious Opera
• This usually implies heroic or tragic drama that employs
mythological characters. This was inherited from the
Baroque period. Ex. Idomeneo by Mozart
Opera Buffa or Comic Opera
• Originally from Italy. Comic opera or clown opera made use
of everyday characters and situations, and typical employed
spoken dialogues, lengthy arias and was spiced with sight
gags, naughty, humor, and social satire. Ex. The marriage of
Figarro, Don Giovanni, The Magic Flute
