MUSIC OF THE

CLASSICAL
PERIOD
MUSIC
Introduction
The Classical Period refers to the post-Baroque and pre-Romantic eras of
music. The word "classical" has two meanings:
• the music of the Classical Period represented by Haydn, Mozart,
Beethoven, and Shubert and
• the music as art in itself. It was during this period that classical symphony
and concerto were developed.

Classical music was greatly influenced by the revolutions that occurred in

European countries. It first started in Austria, France, and Italy. Classical music
was not invented; but rather, it evolved throughout the years.
New instruments were also developed during the Classical
Period, such as the pianoforte, the earliest keyboard that could
play loud and soft sounds. In 1726, a German builder of
keyboard instruments named Gottfriend Silbermann improved
the first made Cristofori-styled instruments. The upright piano
and the iron-framed instruments were also introduced in this
period.

Classical music has been noted for its highly cultured forms of
instrumental music like the concerto, overture, symphony,
symphony poem, opera, suite, and etude among others. It
mainly functioned as entertainment for guests in exclusive
saloons and the noble society.

SONATA
Sonata is a type of musical composition that commonly has a
solo instrument or a small instrumental ensemble. It consists of
two to four movements or sections that are in a related key but
with a unique musical character. The word "sonata" came from
the Italian verb sonare which means "to sound". The term was
first used to suite of dances for lute in 1561.

Most music pieces in the sonata-allegro form have a
homophonic harmony and texture. They also have a short
melody and defined musical phrases, with two or more
contrasting themes. The rhythm of this form is defined and
regular and follows the Alberti Bass style, which is
characterized by broken string accompaniment.
