OBJECTIVES ON COACHING

The main purpose of coaching for new teacher is to develop them as an effective and efficient teacher. It involves the
following:

1) Helping them to realize their full potential as a teacher.

2) Helping the to understand their strengths and weaknesses.

3) Providing them an opportunity to acquire more insight in their behavior, and analyze the dynamics of such behavior.

4) Helping them to have better understanding of the school environment.

5) Increasing their personal and inter-personal effectiveness through effective feedback.

Why is coaching important for teachers?


• Coaching is important for teachers because it empowers them to become better at their profession. Coaching
offers regular discussion revolving around what is most significant for the teacher and supports the development
of goals in which a teacher has full control over selecting.
• It improves teachers' performance. Coaching teachers to improve performance enhances individual skills and
helps them better understand their role in the organization. When teachers know what to do and why they’re
doing it, they’ll perform better and at a higher level.

• Creates stronger team bonds. Coaching in school can help create stronger bonds within your co teachers. As
coachee become more comfortable with coaches, they’ll be more willing to seek help when problems arise.
SKILL REQUIRED FOR COACHING

Great coaches tend to have a number of key skills and attributes.

• Coaches generally have high emotional intelligence: they’re good at understanding and relating to people, and
they’re interested in people. You have to genuinely want to help others develop to become a really good coach.
It’s no good just paying lip service to the idea.

• Coaches need to be able to show empathy and be good at building relationships, including building rapport.

SKILL REQUIRED FOR COACHING

• Coaches are good at gathering information and then clarifying it for the person being coached. They generally have strong
listening skills, including active listening.

• They don’t jump in straight away with the answer but rather make sure that they’ve fully understood the issue by reflecting and
clarifying.

• Similarly, coaches have usually taken time to develop strong questioning skills. It’s been said that coaches should never offer
opinions, but instead only ask questions to guide the person being coached through the issue. This is similar to the role of a
counsellor.

• Coaches and coaching leaders give space and time for people to try things out. They don’t get over-excited or angry about
mistakes, instead they concentrate on how to recover the situation calmly and with the involvement of the person who made the
mistake. They are skilled at providing feedback and using tact and diplomacy.
