MANGROVES
Natures most incredible secrets
CONTEXT:-

Recently NASA has highlighted the loss of mangrove

cover on katchal island(part of nicobars archiphilago)

Key findings of the study:-

The study showed the extent to which mangroves had been lost globally
over the past two decades, and the submergence of mangrove
ecosystems after 2004 Andaman earthquake.
MANGROVES:-
★ About

❏ A mangrove is a small tree or shrub that grows along coastline,

taking root in salty sediments ,often underwater.

❏ Mangroves are flowering trees, belonging to families

Rhizophorecea and Arecacea etc.
Mangroves:-
● Features:

❏ Saline enviroment: A speciality of mangrove is that they can survive under

extreme hostile enviroment. The roots filter out 90% of the salt they come in
contact with the saline and brackish water.

❏ Low oxygen: underground tissues of any plant needs oxygen for respiration.
The mangroves roots absorb oxygen from the atmosphere.

❏ Store freshwater: Mangroves like desert plants ,store fresh water in thick
succulent leaves.
Distribution of Mangroves:-
❏ Asia has the largest coverage of the world’s mangroves , followed by africa
and north america.

❏ In India: The deltas of the Ganges, Mahanadi, Krishna, Godavari and the
cauvery rivers contain mangroves forests.

The backwaters in kerela have the density of mangrove forests.

❏ The sunderbans in West Bengal are the largest mangrove region in the world
and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

❏ The second largest mangove forest in India is Bhitarkanika (Ramsar site) in

Odisha created by two delta of Rivers Brahmani and Baitarni.
Importance of Mangroves

❏ Act as natural barriers against strom surge, Coastal

flooding and sea level rise.

❏ They provide habitat for a diverse array of terrestrial

organisms.

❏ Mangroves are thr powerhouse when it comes to carbon

storage.

❏ Sources of livelihood.
Threats:-
❏ Natual:Stroms ,Sea level rise , Sediments

❏ Anthropogenic: Coastal development and constructions,

aquaculture , ovrfishing.

Way ahead:-
❏ Establishment of green belts and buffer zones

❏ Strenghthening of existing laws

❏ Core research and extensive data collection
