INTRODUCTION

• Before undertaking any significant construction project, it is necessary to carry out a

topographic survey to guide the proposed design
• this will help in showing the ground details and confirming some of the features that were
identified during the desk study if they actually exist on ground
OBJECTIVES OF THE SURVEY

Main Objective

• To produce the topographical Survey map of the proposed site for construction of a sustainable students’ hostel
in Kyambogo University.
Specific Objectives

1. To carry out reconnaissance survey of the proposed piece of land.

2. To establish the site boundary lines of the proposed site using the GPS and the area covered by the proposed plot of the land.

3. To carryout field observations and pick data for example spot heights, existing buildings, trees, water mains and other existing
features with in the land to be surveyed.

4. To produce a topographic survey map that helps in the design of the proposed student’s hostel.
ACTIVITIES CARRIED OUT

Site reconnaissance
• Before starting survey work, the surveyor should walk over the whole area to be surveyed in order
to examine the ground and determine the possible arrangement of framework of survey.

• This was carried out by a direct visit to the site. The project team walked while observing
and recording the different features on the site.
• From the site visit made, the general nature of the ground (terrain) by visual observation
was gently sloping with small trees and vegetation covering the area
ACTIVITIES CONTINUED

Determining site boundary lines.

• when performing a boundary survey, surveyors usually begin with a sketch of the
property and adjoining properties they are surveying
• It was carried out using Real Time Kinematic (RTK) machine. This machine uses a real-
time kinematic global positioning system (GPS)
• The site has a nearly trapezoidal shape measuring 156m at the east, 73.6m at the south, 64.6m at the
north and 141.9m at the west, making the overall perimeter of the site 436.1m.
ACTIVITIES CONTINUED

Field observations
• It involves collection and gathering of information at the proposed site by observation, interviews,
sketching measurement.
• From the elevations, it can be deduced that the land is gently sloping, covering an area of
approximately 10228.9m2.
RTK INSTRUMENT

Real Time Kinematic (RTK)

• RTK surveying is a relative positioning technique which measures the position of two
GNSS antennas relative to each other in real-time.

• Compared to conventional methods of surveying, which rely on the measurement of

heights, angles and distances taken by observing with levels, theodolites and total
stations, GPS is very different, as a receiver determines and then displays the three-
dimensional coordinates at each point surveyed.

Production of Topographical Map

• All the results which were obtained from the field were all entered in the Microsoft Excel
program and saved as a CSV comma delimited file.
• The CSV comma delimited file was imported into AutoCAD Civil 3D program
• From the contours on the topographic map, the land sloping is gentle
CONCLUSIONS, PROBLEMS AND RECOMMENDATIONS

CONCLUSIONS • RECOMMENDATIONS
• the ground was gently sloping and not flat enough hence
need for excavations to attain a horizontal ground before
the construction commences • Vegetation should be cleared off the site
• the existing trees require cutting and the vegetation needs
• The site should be flattened by cutting
to be cleared.

Problems encountered • Erosion control and suitable storm
