Restoration

 Cantonalism: a radical version of federalism that proposed the transformation of Spain into a federal
republic made up of separate states (or cantons).
 Turnismo: rotating system of power, in which two parties alternated in government.
The liberal State (1833-1868)

The reign of Isabel II can be divided into four
stages:
1. The Regencies (1833-1843)
2. The ‘Moderate Decade’ (1843-1854)
3. The ‘Progressive Biennium’ (1854-1856)
4. The system in decline and the new Liberal
Union (1856-1868)
The Sexenio Democrático

 There was a serious crisis in the last years of the reign of Isabel II: a rejection of conservatism, revolts in
rural and urban areas etc.
The Restoration

 In 1874, Martínez Campos crowned Isabell II’s
son Alfonso as King Alfonso XII of Spain. The Constitutional monarchy-

 This system brought stability to Spanish Electoral corruption-

 This shifting of parties prevented the
anarchists, socialists and nationalists from
participating in government. All of these
groups opposed the centralised state.
