BA17ARC060
Mission

Jal Jeevan Mission is to assist, empower and facilitate:

● States/ UTs in planning of participatory rural water supply

strategy for ensuring potable drinking water security on

long-term basis to every rural household and public

institution, viz. GP building, School, Anganwadi centre, Health

centre, wellness centres, etc.

● States/ UTs for creation of water supply infrastructure so

that every rural household has Functional Tap Connection

(FHTC) by 2024 and water in adequate quantity of

prescribed quality is made available on regular basis.

● GPs/ rural communities to plan, implement, manage, own,

operate and maintain their own in-village water supply

systems
Objectives

The broad objectives of the Mission are:

● To provide FHTC to every rural household.
● To prioritize provision of FHTCs in quality affected

areas, villages in drought prone and desert areas,

Sansad Adarsh Gram Yojana (SAGY) villages, etc.

● To provide functional tap connection to Schools,

Anganwadi centres, GP buildings, Health centres,

wellness centres and community buildings

● To monitor functionality of tap connections.
● To assist in ensuring sustainability of water supply

system, i.e. water source, water supply infrastructure,

and funds for regular O&M

Infrastructure planning is the backbone of the Jal Jeevan Mission. A sustainable and efficient water supply
system is essential for ensuring the success of the mission. In this regard, the following factors need to be
considered while planning the infrastructure:

Water Source: The primary concern is to identify a reliable source of water. This may be through ground water,
surface water or a combination of both. The water source should be of good quality, adequate in quantity and
sustainable for the future.

Transmission and Distribution Network: The next step is to plan for the transmission and distribution network
that would be used to deliver water from the source to the households. The network should be designed to
ensure the efficient flow of water, minimal losses and minimal leakages.

Storage: Adequate storage facilities are required to store the water and to ensure a continuous supply even
during times of low water availability. The storage facilities should be designed to be safe, secure and
accessible.
Treatment: The water should be treated to remove any impurities, chemicals and harmful microorganisms. The
treatment process should be designed in such a way that it is efficient, cost-effective and sustainable.

Metering: The water supply system should be equipped with metering devices to measure the volume of water
delivered to each household. This would help in ensuring that each household pays only for the water
consumed and also help in the efficient distribution of water.

Operation and Maintenance: The water supply system should be designed for easy operation and maintenance.
Regular monitoring and maintenance would help in ensuring that the system operates effectively and efficiently.

Community Participation: The community should be involved in the planning and implementation of the JJM.
Community involvement would help in creating awareness and understanding of the importance of the mission,
and in ensuring the sustainability of the water supply system.
In conclusion, the Jal Jeevan Mission is a visionary initiative by the Government of India aimed at providing
functional household tap connections to every rural household. The success of the mission depends on the
infrastructure planning, which should be well thought out and executed. The government should give priority to
the infrastructure planning to ensure the success of the JJM and to improve the quality of life of the rural
population. A well-planned infrastructure would also help in achieving the goal of universal access to safe
drinking water and help in the overall development of the country.
