CONDENSER

By VIGNESHVAR S
INTRODUCTION OF CONDENSER
The duty of the condensor was to condense either pure methanol or a mixture of vapors phases
(composed by condensable components as methanol and water, and non-condensable ones, as
air). Moreover, the condensation had to take place in vacuum conditions. A correct thermal
design of the heat exchangers was a critical point in this case. For condensation of gas mixtures
(further having non-condensable phases as mentioned) the process doesn’t take place in
isothermal conditions like it happens with pure components, demanding thus a very accurate
calculation to be done by our engineers. Besides, our Technical Department advised the client.
TYPES OF CONDENSER
➢ Methanol condensers.
➢ Vent condensers.
➢ Glycerine reboilers.
➢ Bleached oil heaters.
➢ Methyl ester stripping columns.
➢ Glycerine distillation columns.
➢ Methanol distillation columns.
➢ Oil refining columns.
WORKING OF CONDENSER
In systems involving heat transfer, a condensor is a device or unit
used to condense a gaseous substance into a liquid state through
cooling. In so doing, the latent heat is released by the substance
and transferred to the surrounding environment. Condensers are
used for efficient heat rejection in many industrial systems.
Condensers can be made according to numerous designs, and
come in many sizes ranging from rather small (hand-held) to very
large (industrial-scale units used in plant processes). For
example, a refrigirator uses a
condenser to get rid of heat extracted from the interior of the unit
to the outside air.

APPLICATION OF CONDENSER
Application: Condensing of steam in large power plant.

According to the position of fan, forced convection air cooled condenser

is again divided into
a) Base mounted air cooled condenser – The condenser fan is mounted
on the same base of compressor, motor and other parts.

b) Remote air cooled condenser - condenser fan is away from the base.
It may be either inside or outside of the building.
ADVANTAGE OF CONDENSER

1. Intimate mixing of steam and cooling water.

2. Quantity of cooling water required is less.
3. Simple equipment and cost are low.
4. Less space is required.
5. The cooling water pump is not needed in the low-level jet condenser.
Condensate extraction pump is not needed for high level and ejector
condensers.
DISADVANTAGE OF CONDENSER

• Condensate is wasted.
• The cooling water should be clean and free from harmful impurities.
• In low-level jet condensers, the engine may remain flooded, if
condensate extraction pump fails.
• It is Medium in construction.
• It requires more space for its erection.
• Capital running and maintenance costs are considerably higher.
