MATH 6 PPT Q3 - Patterns and Algebra 1

This document discusses finding patterns in sequences and formulating rules to determine the nth term. It provides examples of linear sequences and their rules, such as the sequence 4,7,13,16,... having a rule of 3n+1. Students are asked to determine the 7th term of sequences, write missing terms, find nth term rules, and answer questions from their textbook. The overall topic is identifying and describing patterns in numeric sequences.

Discussion

Numbers, figures, objects or

symbols arranged in a definite order
or sequence is often encountered in
mathematics.

Discussion
The four basic operations (Addition,
Subtraction, Multiplication and division) are
commonly used in a sequence of numbers. In the
Fibonacci numbers above, you start with the first
two numbers. The succeeding numbers are the
sum of the previous two. Therefore, following
the pattern, the next three terms in the sequence
are 13, 21 & 24.
Try to find the next four patterns.
Find the rule, then, write the
missing terms.

Group Activity:
Find the nth term rule for each of the following
linear sequences.
1.) 7,9,11,13,15,...

2.)−3,−2,−1,0,1,...

3.)2,6,10,14,18,...

4.)3,6,9,12,15,...

5.)2,7,12,17,22,...

6.)12,13,14,15,16,...

8.)0,1,2,3,4,...

9.)−3,−2,−1,0,1,...

10.)20,21,22,23,24,...

Generalization

How do we find /
formulate the rules in
finding the next term in a
sequence?

Generalization

Determine the order of numbers if

it is ascending or descending.
Find the difference between the
consecutive terms.
To find the rule of the next term, use
the difference between terms.
