READING INTERVENTION
Project RASA
(Reading Accelerates Student’s Achievement)
I. RATIONALE:
Learning to read is an essential part of basic education. Reading,
after all, is an important gateway to other disciplines. It is the primary
avenue to knowledge. Yet, in the life of a child even in this time of
pandemic, reading is very significant tool to use to discover basic
knowledge about the world he lives in.
Reading is not just however, an innate thing that originates with the
child. It is a set of skills that gradually develops as the child is subjected to
formal education by the school as the responsible institution for the child’s
formal education.
The DepEd as the responsible department of the government in all
educational events institutionalized the implementation of DepEd
Memorandum no. 193, s. 2016, re 2016, with the theme, “Nasa Pagbasa
ang Pag-asa.” This urges schools to consider reading as a very significant
factor to the success or failure in every educational endeavor.
The result of Phil-IRI will serve as determining factor for teachers to
decide whether the pupil is reader or not.
Maragondon Elementary School envisioned to eradicate non-
readers because having reading difficulties have negative impacts in all
areas of learning and are difficult to remediate as students grow older
(Hernandez, 2015).
As cited by Allor & Chard (2015) children who are poor readers in
the early grades typically continue to struggle with reading throughout
their educational careers. Yet, early intervention is essential for the
success of pupils who have been identified as having difficulty in reading
or slow readers.
Maragondon Elementary School conceptualized and implemented
the Project RASA “Reading Accelerates Student’s Achievement” as one of
the programs and compilations of reading strategies designed to increase
pupils’ skills in reading. This intervention is comparable in making a broom
of Maragondon community. It requires a manifestation of hard work,
passion, dedication, and commitment to influence young minds to
discover the wonder of reading.

II. OBJECTIVES:
Reduce the number of non-readers in English and Filipino across all grade
levels using different reading strategies to develop reading fluency and
comprehension.
III. STRATEGIES:
Project RASA is an approach to reading instruction that incorporates the
following:
a. Collaborative reading. This is an instructional approach that involves a
teacher –pupils or volunteer-pupils, working with a small group to read texts
that are easy and enough for pupils to read with skillful support of teachers or
peer tutors.
b. Repeated readings. This is where pupils engaged in an "echo reading,"
(teacher reads a line and all the pupils repeat the line back to the teacher).
c. Pull out reading strategy. Identified non-readers in all grade levels are put in
one place to provide reading exercises and activities supervised by the special
teacher.
d. “Friday, A Reading Day”- This activity is provided to enhance the skills of
every learner in reading. Learners are provided with various reading materials
and texts that will enable them to develop their genuine love for reading.
c. Conduct Phil-IRI. A mechanism to measure the reading performance of
pupils.
