A reading innovation using Video Lesson- Synthetic Phonics-based

Activity Objectives 1.Improve the reading performance by 75 % of the 189 non-readers
and 368 frustration readers to the next level;
2.capacitate teachers to the different strategies in teaching reading;
and
3.create appropriate reading materials suited for learners’ needs.

There are many factors that may contribute to learners having
difficulty in learning to read, thus the school must initiate a plan and

make assessment for these learners.
The reading intervention proposed and initiated by the school was
conducted through face to face with the use of video lesson using
synthetic phonics-based approach. An intervention that supports
young learners to continue learning and developing reading skills.
The Division of Pagadian City, CID Supervisors and Principals
conducted a pre-oral reading validation to all pupils from grade 1 to
grade VI of Balangasan Central Elementary School for school year
2022-2023, which has a total enrolment of 1, 989 from Grade I to
Grade VI. The pre-oral reading validation serves as the basis for the
implementation and conduct of post oral reading validation using the
reading materials prepared by the Division of Pagadian City.
Hence, this Reading Intervention, Project Stair 2.0 is proposed to
bridge literacy gap of the 193 non-readers and 368 frustration
readers based on the result of the Division Reading Validation.

As a result, on the data gathered during post-oral reading


evaluation, there was a huge decrease in numbers of non-readers
from Grade I to Grade VI. The 96 (27.5%) non-readers of Grade 1
drops to 2 (.6%), the 47 non-readers of Grade 2 decreases to 9
(2.9%), the 17 non-readers of Grade 3 declines to 2 (.7%), the 28

non-readers of Grade 4 drops to 0, in Grade 5 the 1 non-reader


remains, and in Grade 6 they don’t have a non-reader anymore.
On the data gathered during post-oral reading evaluation for
frustration, there was a significant decrease in numbers of frustration
readers from Grade I to Grade VI. The 123 frustration readers of
Grade 1 drops to 37 (10.6%), the 50 frustration readers of Grade 2
decreases to 23 (7.6%), the 41 frustration readers of Grade 3 declines
to 32 (13.6%), the 77 frustration readers of Grade 4 drops to 25
(6.5%), the 39 frustration readers of Grade 5 drops to 21 (11.5%),
and in Grade 6 there are 38 frustration readers and it decreases to 11
(3.5%). It is evident that the intervention given was useful, helpful,
and effective to the pupils.

General Comments *Some of the identified non-readers and frustration readers kept on

Recommendations *Effective messaging and engagement to the parents is a chance to


make them aware and must realize what is the child has missed in
school, how dramatically slow down reading progress and they can
have a significant impact on their future education.
*School administrators and teachers need to explicitly remind pupils
that bullying is not accepted in school. Preventing and stopping
bullying involves a commitment to create a safe environment where
children can thrive, socially and academically, without being afraid
to admit that they are non-readers and frustration readers, that they
need help from their teachers and classmates.
